Tomato Dal / Thakali Paruppu Kulambu / Tomato Pappu / Andhra Tomato Dal / Split Pigeon Peas flavoured with Tomatoes


Happy Saturday Guys…Hope you all are getting ready to enjoy your weekend..I have just started to do it..Today we had a awesome breakfast with chapatti and green peas curry..It was delicious and good for my diet..I really loved it after 5 days of fruits and vegetables diet..The good impact from that diet is, it controlled my hunger and reduced my appetite, which is really great..

Coming to today's recipe it is a healthy dal which is flavoured with tomatoes, cumin and all kinds of yummy stuffs..I can’t tell you how good it is for you..At the same time it taste heavenly..

Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu / Split Pigeon Peas – 1 cup
Tomatoes – 2 large chopped
Green Chilli – 1 slit
Salt to taste
Water – 4 cups

For Seasoning:
Oil / Ghee – 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam – 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds / Methi / Vendayam – ½ tsp
Dry Red Chilli – 1
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander Powder / Malli Podi– 1 tblspn
Tomato – 1 small chopped


Wash dal in several changes of water and let it soak for 15 mins.

Now take in a pot and add water, tomatoes and green chilli and bring it to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins untill the dal is cooked completely..It should be completely mushy.

Now add salt and mix well..Keep this in simmering..Adjust the water level if you need..

Heat a tawa or kadai. Add oil in it. Add mustard seeds , cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dry red chilli, curry leaves, turmeric powder, chilli powder,coriander powder and tomatoes. Mix this for a min.

Pour this seasoning over the dal and mix well.

Let it simmer for 5 more minutes.

Serve with a bed of rice or roti.

Take all your ingrediants
Take dal, tomatoes and green chilli in a kadai
add water
bring it to a boil
cover and simmer untill cooked
add salt
and mix well
now make seasoning..heat oil
add mustard and cumin seeds
in goes fenugreek seeds
dry red chilli and curry leaves
add turmeric powder
chilli and coriander powder
and mix well
add tomatoes
and toss well
add it to the dal
and mix well

    and err aarthi what about khatai i mean no nimbu or is tomatoes enough for khatai.

    if so i would make this one and u used no onion or garlic.

    Tomatoes have enough sourness to give for this dish...so no need to add any more sour agents...if you wish you can add a small squeeze of lemon juice...
