Raw Banana Chukka Fry Recipe / Vazhakkai Chukka Varuval Recipe


I had few raw banana lying in the fridge, i wanted to use them in a different recipe other than poriyal, podimas, fry or my favorite podi fry. So i decided to try a chukka fry recipe but in a jain style without using onions and garlic..It tasted so good and i served it with paruppu rasam, vallarai keerai kootu. Will share both the recipes soon. So hope you give this a try and let me know how it turns out..


Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 30 mins
Serves : 4 to 5

Ingredients:

Raw Banana / Vazhakkai - 3 large peeled and chopped
Tomato - 1 large chopped
Green Chilli - 2 slit
Ginger - 1 tblspn grated
Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
Coriander Powder / Malli Podi - 1 tblspn
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp + 1 tsp
Salt to taste

For Grinding:
Coconut - 1/2 cup grated
Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 2 tsp

For Seasoning:
Oil - 2 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku -  1tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - 1/4 tsp
Curry Leaves - a sprig

Method:

Grind coconut and fennel seeds to a smooth paste and set aside.

Start by cooking raw banana. Heat water in a sauce pan, add in salt and turmeric powder. Once it reaches a boil, add in cubed banana and cook for 5 to 7 mins. Turn off the heat and strain it. Set aside.

Heat oil in a kadai. Add in tempering spices, let them sizzle for 30 sec.

Add in tomatoes, green chilli and ginger. Cook them for couple of mins.

Now add in all the spice powders and salt. Mix well.

Now add in cooked banana and toss well with the masala.

Add in coconut paste and cook on a low heat stiring often for 10 mins till the water evaporates and masala coats the raw banana.

Serve with rice and gravy.

Take all your ingredients

Grind coconut and fennel seeds together
Bring water to a boil

Add in salt and turmeric powder

Add in cubed raw banana and let them cook

Once they are tender but yet first, drain them

Heat oil in a kadai

Add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves
and asafoetida

Add in tomatoes and green chilli

add in grated ginger

mix well 

saute them till they are almost cooked and mushy

just like this

Add in all the spice powders

mix well

Add in cubed raw banana

mix well will the masala

add in coconut fennel paste

Mix them well and simmer for 10 mins

They will dry up and the masala will coat the banana

Serve
