Ayala Meen Kuzhambu Recipe / Ayila Meen Kulambu / Mackerel Fish Curry Recipe

Couple days back hubby bought this fish from the market. For so many days i wanted to try a village style fish curry and i decided to give a try and it turned out really good. If you guys have any traditional fish recipes which taste yum, please send it to me..I would love to give it a try.. You can check out my other fish recipes too, i have so many gravy recipes, my favourites are chettinad fish curry, ajwain fish curry, kerala red fish curry and so many..

This has become my latest favorite fish, i love the flesh and silky taste of mackerel fish so much. I have another recipe for a fried mackerel fish which will be posted very soon..I hope you will try this out and let me know how it turned out for you..
Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 25 to 30 mins
Serves : 4 to 5

Ingredients:
Ayala Meen / Mackerel Fish – 6 cut into big pieces

For Cooking Fish :
Water – 3 cups
Curry Leaves – 2 sprigs
Green Chilli – 2 slit
Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder / Manjal podi – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

For Masala:
Coconut Oil – 2 tblspn
Garlic – 1 tblspn chopped finely
Ginger – 1 tblspn finely chopped 
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Onion – 1 medium size chopped finely
Tomatoes – 2 medium size chopped finely
Fresh Coconut – 1/2 cup grated
Chilli Powder – 2 tsp or to taste
Coriander Powder – 2 tsp 
Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Tamarind Pulp – 2 tblspn

Method:
Start by roasting coconut till golden brown in a kadai. Remove it to a blender and make it into a fine puree.
Now in the same kadai. add in all the ingredients given for cooking fish. Add in fish and cover and cook for 5 mins till the fish is half cooked. Remove it to bowl.
Now in the same kadai. Add in oil and fry ginger, garlic and curry leaves.
Add in onions, sprinkle some salt and saute for 5 mins till it turns light golden.
Add in tomatoes and cook for further 5 mins till it turns mushy.
Now add in chilli, coriander and turmeric powder. Mix well.
Add in tamarind pulp, coconut paste and saute for 7 to 8 mins till it is well mixed and oil separates.
Add in the cooked fish along with any liquid. Mix well.
Cover and simmer again for 5 to 7 mins or till oil floats.
Remove and serve with rice.

This is ayila/ ayala / mackerel fish

Start by dry roasting coconut in a pan..I had some
chopped coconut pieces,
so i used that..You can use grated ones..

roast till it turns golden brown

take it in a blender

make it into a fine puree
Take water in a earthern ware pot

add in curry leaves

add in 2 slit green chillies

sprinkle some salt

add in chilli, coriander and turmeric powder

add in the fish pieces

heat it up

cover and cook till the fish is half cooked, around 5 mins

Dont over cook the fish, because it is going to
cook again…

remove it to a bowl

Heat some coconut oil in the same kadai

add in curryleaves,ginger and garlic

add in onions

sprinkle in salt

saute it

once it is well cooked

add in tomatoes

cook till it turns mushy

add in chilli, coriander and  turmeric powder

mix well

add in tamarind pulp

add in coconut masala

cook this coconut mix for 5 to 8 mins 

now add in the cooked fish pieces along with the water

mix well

 cover and simmer

cook till oil separates

done

serve with rice..

    Hi Aarthi,

    Can you tell me why do we have to cook Fish separately with Chilli, Curry leaves and other spice powders then again with ground masala? Can we not add Fish after the raw smell goes from ground masala?

    @preethiThis is a way of making this curry..You can do it any way like you want. But this way makes it more tasty.

    Tasty..tasty tasty!!!! Wat else I can say??? I was having some ayala meen pieces left on my fridge and want to try some different curry…just tried ur recipe. ..it came really really tasty…cant stop eating. ..:) keep up the good work
