I love fried chicken, could say that I am totally addicted to it. My favourite is from a shop called bangs in my place, they make an awesome fried chicken which they sprinkle with a tangy lime pepper dry spice mix in the end which is lip smacking good.

Always wanted to try the Southern fried chicken recipe. Last week I tried it my way and guess what the chicken turned out so juicy, crispy and just perfection.

    About Southern Fried Chicken

Fried chicken, also known as Southern fried chicken, is a dish made of chicken pieces after being coated with seasoned flour is deep-fried till crispy. The breading gives the outside of the chicken a crisp coating or crust while keeping the juices in the meat.

Southern fried chicken is a flavour packed bomb chicken recipe. It has heavy seasoned chicken which are deep fried till crispy makes it one of the addictive chicken recipe. You have to try my Fried Chicken Burger & my Spicy Chicken Wings.

Southern fried chicken originated in the Southern United States, especially in states like Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Its roots go back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are deeply connected to African American culinary traditions.

For making the best crispy and flavourful fried chicken, make sure the chicken which you use is bone-in and skin-on. Using chicken with skins makes the crispy fried chicken.

The speciality of this fried chicken is the seasonings we use. Even though there is readymade seasoning packets available, I like to make my own mix with garlic powder, onion Powder, paprika, black pepper, dried oregano, basil and many more.

The marination for chicken also plays an important role. I add buttermilk which act as a tenderizer and hot sauce which penetrates deep into the chicken making it super flavourful and addictive.

This recipe is slightly different from my other fried chicken recipes like, KFC fried chicken, chicken strips and Korean fried chicken.

4 Easy Crispy Fried Chicken Hacks

Chicken Marination - Marinate chicken with the spice mix, buttermilk, hot sauce, vinegar, salt and sugar. It is best to marinade for at least 4 hours to overnight. Once marination is done, you add egg and flour to give some binding to the chicken.

Seasoned flour - prepare the unique seasoned flour with plain flour, cornstarch, spicy mix and seasonings. This is what makes the outer coating super crunchy.

Dredging - to create the iconic flaky texture which we love in a fried chicken, I prefer adding chicken over the seasoned flour kept in a container and shake it well for few seconds. This shaking hack gives the flaky texture on the chicken.

Frying - make sure you use large cooking pot with extra oil to fry the chicken properly. Don't over crowd the pan, else the oil temp may drop and the chicken won't fry properly. For maximum crispy texture, you can double fry chicken.

    Ingredients

    • Chicken - make sure to use bone-in and skin-on chicken pieces. I like to use chicken wings.
    • Spice mix - The special seasoning blend is what gives the chicken flavour. I used a combo of garlic, onion powder, paprika, dried oregano, basil, rosemary. Celery salt, black pepper is also used.
    • Buttermilk - buttermilk helps tenderizes the chicken which makes it super juicy.
    • Hot Sauce - unique and spicy kick to the chicken is given by the sauce.
    • Seasoned Flour - Plain flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt and the seasoning mix is used for the flour.
    • Egg - this ingredient is added to the marinated chicken which acts as a binding along with plain flour.
    • Oil - I use sunflower oil for deep frying, you can use any neutral tasting oil.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Mix Seasoning

1)Take all seasoning ingredients in a bowl and mix it really well. This is your seasoning blend. You are going to add half of it in chicken marination and other half in seasoned flour.

    Marinating Chicken

    2)Take chicken in a bowl. I am using bone-in & skin-on chicken wings.

3)Add in half of the seasoning. Season with salt and sugar.

4)Add in chicken bouillon, hot sauce, buttermilk, and vinegar.

5)Mix this really well. Cover and let it marinate in the fridge overnight.

    Seasoned Flour

6)the next day, take plain flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder and the remaining half of the seasoning in a large container with lid.

7)Mix it really well and set aside.

    Binding Chicken

8)Remove the chicken from fridge at least 1 hour before frying. Add in egg and 1 cup of plain flour to the chicken and mix it really well. This is your binding ingredient.

9)Now lets coat the chicken in seasoned flour and fry.

    Dredging Chicken

10)Take the chicken and the seasoned flour. Take the chicken from marination and shake off any excess marination, add it to the seasoned flour.

11)Cover it with a lid and shake it well for 10 to 20 seconds.

12)Now take the chicken from the flour and set aside in a wire rack to dry for 1 minute.

    Frying Chicken

13)Heat oil for deep frying. Once the oil is hot, drop chicken in the hot oil and fry for 8 to 10 minutes on medium high heat.

14)Once fried and crispy. Remove and place on some paper towel to remove excess oil.

    15)Serve immediately.
