    About Pressure Cooker Chicken Curry

Chicken curry, also known as curry chicken, is a dish from the Indian subcontinent. It is widespread in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. A typical Indian subcontinent curry consists of chicken stewed in an onion-and- tomato-based sauce flavoured with ginger, garlic, tomato puree,
chilli peppers, and a variety of spices, which may include turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cardamom. Outside of South Asia, chicken curry is frequently made with curry powder, a pre-made spice mixture.

Pressure cooking is the process of cooking food in a sealed vessel known as a pressure cooker using high pressure steam and water or a water-based cooking liquid. High pressure prevents boiling and produces higher cooking temperatures, which cook food much faster.

Now let me talk something about this recipe. This is one of very basic chicken curry you could make. It calls for very basic ingredients, so you can whip up this no time. The cool thing about this is it is cooked in a pressure cooker which cooks the chicken quickly and makes it so meltingly tender.

    Chicken Curry Ingredients

Onion & Tomato - like all curries, onions and tomatoes form base of the Indian curries.

Ginger Garlic Paste - Ginger garlic paste is a staple in many Indian dishes, ranging from curries to biryanis and everything in between. It adds delectable, savoury notes as well as a heavenly aroma that is unique to Indian cuisine.

Spice Powders - You have to use chilli powder, turmeric, garam masala powder. You can use any of your favorite chicken curry masala as well.

Chicken - you have to use bone-in chicken for the curry to add maximum flavour and taste. Chicken thigh is a good option, chicken breast tends to get stringy.

Whole spices - fennel seeds adds a earthy sweet note to the curry.

Coconut oil - I prefer cooking chicken curry in coconut oil but you can use any oil.

How to Make Pressure Cooker Chicken Curry (Stepwise Pictures)

    Take all your ingredients
Wash your chicken pieces very well and let it drain
Heat oil in a pressure cooker
    fennel seeds
add in onions and cook them for a min
    add in salt
    throw in ginger garlic paste
    and your spice powders
    mix them well
add in the tomato and curry leaves
    and give it a stir
    add the chicken pieces in
and toss well with the masala
cover the pressure cooker with the lid and let them cook
    till they are perfectly cooked
    Serve

    Expert Tips

    • Use bone-in chicken for best flavour. You can use boneless as well. But make sure to use chicken thigh. Since chicken breast tends to get stringy soon.
    • Readymade chicken masala can be used for this curry.
    • This curry doesn't use coconut so make sure to cook the onions and tomatoes to form the base.
    • ½ cup of coconut milk can be used in the end.

    FAQ

      Hi Arthi,
Thanks for this easy recipe. Have tried your Mooli Paratha recipe and it turned out great, thanks for the tip on adding chat masala. For the chicken curry do we need to add water during the pressure cooking process ? How much would be required? Was wondering if it would stick to the cooker in case we dont add any water.
      Thanks,
      Sue

@SueThanks for trying sue, no you dont need to add water to the chicken. The chicken will leach a lot of its water.
