Varagu Kanji Recipe / Kodo Millet Porridge Recipe - Millets Recipes

Porridge / Kanji takes place atleast once in a week in my house. Normally it will be ulundu kanji or this wheat ulundu kanji. But I made this porridge yesterday and i loved it so much. Its been a while since i posted any millets recipes and many people has started asking me. I have already posted millets porridge before and this one is made with only varagu. When i had this, i didn't miss my normal rice milk kanji and it tasted so yummy. You can have it with this thoran but i made a spicy podi chana sundal and had with that. Will share that soon.

I loved this bowl set so much, this is again hubby's gift for me from russia..So give this a try and let me know how it turned out for you..

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 25 to 30 mins
Serves : 4


Varagu / Kodo Millet - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Garlic - 10 cloves peeled
Curry Leaves a handful
Salt to taste
Freshly Crushed Pepper to taste
Boiled Milk - 2 to 3 cups or as needed


Take varagu in a bowl and wash it really well. Now take it in pressure cooker, add in water, curry leaves, garlic and salt. 

Cook for 3 whistle. Simmer it for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and mix it well.

Add in milk and mix well. Adjust the milk quantity as you need.

Now pour kanji into a bowl and serve with a sprinkling of pepper and pickle.


This is varagu

Measure 1 cup in a bowl

add in water and wash well

Take washed varagu in a pressure cooked

add in water

some curry leaves

some peeled garlic


pressure cook

now it is cooked

Mash it well and pour in milk

add as much milk as you need

Serve with a sprinkling of pepper powder..
