Fresh sugarcane juice, also known as Karumbu saru in Tamil or karumbu juice, is one of the most popular and refreshing summer drinks that is enjoyed across India. It is a naturally sweet and healthy drink that instantly cools down your body and keeps you refreshed during hot days.  Learn how to make sugarcane juice without any special equipments.

    Sugarcane Juice

This juice is usually popular at roadside shops, where the vendor presses large sugarcane sticks through a big machine to extract the juice. But I came to know that it can be made easily at home after seeing my friend Sharmi's blog post.

    About Homemade Sugarcane Juice

Summer is at its peak right now and honestly fresh juices are a real lifesaver during these hot days. And this juice is naturally sweet and refreshing drink that is made with fresh sugarcane sticks, ginger and lemon juice, which keeps you hydrated and energized throughout the day.

For me, summer travels are always incomplete without stopping by roadside stalls to enjoy fresh drinks like sugarcane juice, watermelon juice and tender coconut water.

These drinks are naturally cool and keep you refreshed under the hot sun and it is far better than the packaged drinks or sodas.

    Expert Tips

    • Choose sugar cane that is so fresh, green and moist. Avoid old, dry or fibrous cane, as it won't taste good.
    • Remove the hard outer layer as it may turn the juice bitter.
    • Chop the sugarcane into small pieces so that it will be easy to blend.
    • Use a heavy duty mixer or grinder for crushing the sugarcane. Don't use regular blenders.
    • Use a fine strainer or muslin cloth to separate the juice from the pulp to get a smooth and clean juice.

    Storage & Serving

Fresh sugarcane juice tastes best when served immediately. It can ferment quickly if stored too long, so enjoy it right after making for best flavour and taste.

While serving, add ice cubes, mint leaves to make it a more refreshed and cooling drink.
