    Fruit salad is a refreshing and colorful salad made with fresh fruits like pineapple, guava, apple and muskmelon. The fruits are tossed in the orange jaggery syrup which adds a gentle sweetness and tangy flavour to the salad. This is a quick and easy fruit salad packed with a lot of nutrients. It is a perfect recipe to enjoy as a healthy snack, light breakfast or as a dessert for hot summer days.

    Salads are a great thing to make when you feel like eating healthy. Specially mixed fruit salad is my favourite. I normally chop all my fruits and toss them with little salt and pepper or sugar or honey and eat it.

    • Muskmelon / Cantaloupe - Muskmelon is a refreshing and juicy fruit that tastes so mild and has a smooth texture. Honeydew melon, pear or watermelon also work well as a substitute. 
    • Red apple - Red apple is a crispy textured fruit that is naturally sweet. You can replace it with pear, grapes. 
    • Green apple - If you don't have a green apple, use kiwi or a splash of lemon juice which gives the same tangy effect. 
    • Guava - Guava adds a unique aroma, soft crunch and tropical flavour to the salad.
    • For Dressing - Fresh orange juice , jaggery and lemon juice is used to make syrup.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Salad Dressing

    1)We are making fresh orange juice. For that, take fresh oranges in a blender.

    2)Pulse few times to blend them.

    3)Strain the orange juice through a sieve.

    4)Press and extract as much juice as possible.

    5)Fresh orange juice is done. Instead of making fresh orange juice, you can use bottled juice as well.

    6)Take orange juice in a sauce pan. Add in lemon juice.

    7)Add in jaggery, you can use sugar too.

    8)Boil them together and cook them until syrupy.

    9)Now the orange sauce or syrup is ready for dressing.

    Prepare Fruits

    10)Take a pineapple. Use a serrated knife to remove the peel.

    11)Chop them into small cubes. Set aside.

    12)Take some apples.

    13)Cut them in half. Remove the core.

    14)Chop them into small cubes. Set aside.

    15)take some guava. Remove the top and bottom off.

    16)Slice them into thick slices.

    17)Cube them. Set aside.

    18)Cut open a cantaloupe.

    19)Remove off the peel using a knife.

    20)Cut them into cubes.

    Assembling salad

    21)Take all the fruits in a mixing bowl.

    22)Pour the cooled orange sauce over it.

    23)Toss to combine. Place them in fridge and let them get cool.

    24)Serve cold.


    Expert Tips

    • Use fresh and firm fruits to get the flavours and natural sweetness. Avoid overripe fruits. 
    • Wash and chop all the fruits into equal bite sized pieces.
    • Add chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts for extra crunch and flavour.
    • The orange syrup should be completely cooled before tossing with fruits. 
    • Orange zest can also be added while making syrup to make it even more flavourful. 
    • Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon powder for a flavour twist.

    Storage & Serving

    Store the mixed fruit salad in an airtight container and it stays good in the refrigerator for 1 to 3 days. 

    Serve this healthy and refreshing fruit salad as a breakfast bowl, post workout snack, or as a dessert after a meal.

    What other fruits can be used in this fruit salad ? 

    Well, you can use almost any fresh seasonal fruits like mango, berries, grapes, papaya based on what you have. Fresh fruits always give the best texture and flavour.

    Can I make this ahead of time ? 

    Yes. You can chop the fruits and mix the orange jaggery syrup a day before serving. Chill them and toss together before serving so the fruit stays fresh and juicy. 

    Can I add other toppings to the fruit salad ? 

    Absolutely! You can add toppings like chopped nuts, greek yogurt to make it even more satisfying and delicious.

    Ingredients
      

    • 3 cups Pineapple
    • 2 cups Cantaloupe
    • 1 large Red Apple chopped
    • 1 large Green Apple chopped
    • 1 medium Guava chopped

    For Syrup

    • 1 cup Orange Juice
    • ¼ cup Jaggery or Brown Sugar
    • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice

    Instructions
     

    • Start by making the syrup, by mixing all the ingredients in a sauce pan and heat it till it is thick and syrupy. Take it in a bowl and chill it in fridge.
    • Prepare and chop all fruits and take it in a bowl. Pour the cooled syrup over it and toss well.
    • Serve.
