Making puttu is always a fun, i love making it. This was our major breakfast dish throughout the week. I make a whole lot of it starting from regular puttu, wheat puttu, and corn puttu..This is another recipe which i learned from my friend who brings this to office. We used to fight for it, But i used to get most of the share out if it.

I want to try it by myself and asked my friend for the recipe. Yesterday i got a chance to make it. And it was a absolute success. I sent few to my mom, who is a lover for tapioca..

This can be served with chickpea curry or fish curry or with some spoonful of sugar and banana. I love it with plain sugar or eat it as it is.

Preparation Time : 15-20 mins

Cooking Time : 15 – 20 mins for one funnel
Serves : 4 – 5

Ingredients:

Tapioca / Maravalli Kilangu / cassava / Yuca – 1 kg

Coconut – 1 1/2 cup freshly grated
Salt to taste

Method:

Peel off tapioca, cut them into big pieces, You can grate them in grater or use food processor to grate them.

Once grated, take them in a bowl. Add salt to it and mix them well.

Use your hands to squeeze the milk from it. You should remove most of the milk from it and throw that away.

Now take your puttu making gadget, Put the holed disc in the bottom and fill the bottom pot with water, place the disc placed funnel over the pot.

Sprinkle coconut in the bottom, followed by the tapioca mixture, do this alternatively. Make sure the top layer is coconut.Cover with the lid.

Place it on heat and steam it for 15-20 mins till cooked.

Now using the back of a ladle, push the puttu from the funnel and serve hot.

Pictorial:

You will need some fresh Tapioca
Cut the top & bottom of the tapioca, cut them in half
Peel em
Cut them into big long pieces
I used my food processor to grate it, you can do it by hand
drop the tapioca in
and grate it
transfer it to a bowl
add some salt
and start mixing
mix it well
Now squeeze it with your hands
till you get most of the milk out of it
Throw this away
This is the squeezed tapioca
Now take your puttu kolal
drop the steaming plate it
and top it over the water filled pot
first add coconut in
followed by tapioca
followed by coconut
and tapioca
finally top it with coconut
now steam it
release it from the funnel
Serve

I tried this today but it became little salty after I had extra salt to the tapioca when mixing it. Is there any way I can rectify this, thanks.
