Vietnamese coffee also known as Cà Phê Sữa Đá is a speciality brewed coffee which is bold, intense and rich in flavour. It is traditionally brewed using a phin filter which makes it truly unique. The hot brewed coffee is poured over condensed milk and served with ice.

I have an addiction towards coffee, I can have it any time, any time and all day. I have made Vietnamese coffee earlier and blogged about it. But it is not done the authentic way.

But few weeks back hubby friend bought coffee set from Vietnam which has authentic Vietnamese coffee, and the coffee brewing kit which made me update the recipe with much more authentic techniques.

    About Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnamese coffee is an intense coffee made with ground coffee, sweetened condensed milk and ice cubes. The coffee from Vietnam is so good, I loved the quality and aroma.

Vietnam mainly grows Robusta beans, which have almost double the caffeine of Arabica. This gives the coffee a strong, slightly bitter taste that wakes you up instantly.

There are few versions of coffee. Cà Phê Sữa Đá is a strong hot coffee poured over sweetened condensed milk and served with ice. Another famous version is Vietnamese egg coffee (Cà Phê Trứng), where hot coffee is topped with a custard made from egg yolk and sugar. I have to try it some time.

Traditional Vietnamese coffee is brewed using a phin filter which is a small metal dripper that slowly extracts the coffee, making every cup concentrated. This coffee is so strong, it is mixed with condensed milk and ice to dilute it.

This is a vietnamese version of cold coffee. It is a combination of coffee, condensed milk and lots of ice cubes. There is no particular measurements for this, you have to taste it and add the ingredients to your taste.

I used star vina luwak coffee is also known as kopi luwak, which traditionally comes from coffee cherries that have passed through the digestive tract of the Asian palm civet. It is said to be the most expensive coffee.

Not sure how true it is, since it is not verified as authentic. But the coffee which I made using this tasted great.  I poured my coffee over ice to make cold refreshing coffee. But you can enjoy it hot too.

There are many ways you can serve Vietnamese coffee.

    • Phin-on-glass style (most iconic) - mix brewed coffee with more hot water.
    • Cà Phê Sữa Đá (Iced milk coffee) - add condensed milk, ice cubes with brewed coffee.
    • Cà Phê Đen (Black coffee) - no milk, no sugar added.
    • Coconut coffee (Cà Phê Dừa) - Strong coffee with coconut cream or coconut milk.

    Ingredients

    • Coffee - you can use any ground coffee for this recipe. Instant coffee is not used.
    • Sweetened condensed milk - the measurement totally depends on your taste. Add more or less to your liking
    • Hot water - used to brew the coffee.
    • Ice cubes - brewed coffee is poured over ice before serving makes it more delicious.

The best thing about Vietnamese iced coffee is the decocotion which is made like our filter coffee. Adding condensed milk does not make this Vietnamese.

It's awesome that you are venturing into other cuisines, it's equally important to get facts right. Please make sure to research a bit before posting or you could title to say Pseudo Vietnamese Coffee.
