    About Nasi Goreng

Nasi goreng is a popular Indonesian dish that translates to "fried rice" in English. It is a flavorful and savory fried rice dish. Nasi goreng is a staple food in Indonesia and is enjoyed as a main course for lunch or dinner.

Usually made with chicken but prawns can be used as well. If you are vegetarian use tofu instead. We served this with fried egg, but I have another version in which i scrambled egg into the rice.

Nasi goreng is often associated with Indonesia, but it is also a popular dish in Malaysia. Both Indonesia and Malaysia have their versions of nasi goreng, and the dish has become part of the culinary heritage of both countries.

    Nasi Goreng Ingredients

Cooked Rice - Use long grain rice that is cooked and cooled. I like to use cooked jasmine rioce in my nasi goreng. Cook rice in a sauce pan with 1:2 ratio, I like to use 2 cups of water for every 1 cup rice. Make sure you wash the rice really well before cooking. Also leftover rice is preferred in fried rice.

Protein - Proteins like chicken, prawns, beef, pork is used in nasi goreng. Vegetarians can opt to tofu, tempeh, mushrooms.

Vegetables - Traditionally long beans are used in nasi goreng. Carrots, peas, beans can be used.

Eggs - Eggs can be scrambled into the fried rice when making it. But i like to top my fried rice with a fried egg.

Seasoning & Sauces - Main flavourings for nasi goreng is the aromatic sambal which we saute. Shallots, shrimp paste, garlic, chillies are ground and sauted to begin with. I used chicken boulilion cube instead of shrimp paste. kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) is used mainly for colour and for sweet taste. Soy sauce is also added.

    Optional Ingredients

    • Shrimp paste (terasi): It is a traditional ingredient used in some nasi goreng recipes to add umami flavor.
    • Kaffir lime leaves: These fragrant leaves can be added for a citrusy aroma.
    • Lemongrass: Some recipes call for lemongrass to add a refreshing taste.
    • Sambal: A spicy chili sauce that can be served on the side or mixed into the dish for extra heat.

    Making Seasoning Paste

For Making nasi goreng. Take shallots, garlic, chillies and Maggi stock cube in a blender and puree till coarsely blended. If you use shrimp paste, then instead of maggi stock cube you can use shrimp paste for the authentic touch.

    Fried Eggs

Heat a wok on high heat. Add in oil and let it shimmer. Now crack an egg in the wok and cook till crispy. Remove it using a slotted spoon and set aside.

    Making Stir Fry Rice

In the same wok, add in the ground paste and saute on low heat for 3 mins till aromatic. Add in chicken and stir fry for a min. Season with salt, 2 tablespoon of kecap manis and saute for 4 to 5 mins till cooked. Add in green beans and stir fry for a min. Add in cooked rice, remaining kecap manis, soy sauce, salt, sugar and stir fry to make sure the sauce coats each grain of rice.
