Chocolate Idli Cake Recipe - Eggless Steamed Idli Cakes Recipe

Oneday i was lying in bed watching TV (which doesn't happen often), I came across the new pilsbury's commercial. The recipe is a chocolate idli cake. Suddenly the idea struck me, i wanted to create a steamed chocolate idli cake recipe on my own. The very next day i was in the kitchen experimenting the recipe. And guess what my first attempt itself is a huge success.

The cake took less than 15 mins to make from start to finish and i was so happy to see the super spongy cake. This recipe is such a keeper, great for your sudden chocolate cake craving. It is great for people who dont have a oven, it can be made in a idli steamer or any bowl.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 5 to 7 mins
Makes: 6 idlies


All Purpose Flour / Maida - 1/4 cup
Sooji / Rava / Semolina - 1/4 cup
Cocoa Powder - 2 tblspn
Oil - 2 tblspn
Curd / Yogurt - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 3 to 4 tblspn
Water or Milk - 1/4 cup
Baking Soda - 1/4 tsp
Vanilla Essence - 1 tsp
Sprinkles as needed 
Chocolate Sauce for serving


Take yogurt, sugar in a bowl and whisk till creamy and sugar is melted.

Now add in oil and vanilla and whisk well.

Add in sooji, cocoa and mix well. Set aside for 5 mins.

Now add in water and mix well.

Add in baking soda and mix well.

Add in flour and fold gently.

Now spoon this in a well greased idli plate and steam for 5 to 7 mins. Insert a toothpick to check whether the cake is done.

Now remove and let it cool for a min.

Use a spoon to remove it and serve

Take all your ingredients

Take your idli plates

grease it well with oil

take yogurt in a bowl

add sugar

mix well till creamy

add oil

add vanilla

mix well

add sooji

add cocoa powder

fold gently

add water and mix well

set aside for 5 mins or so

add in baking soda

add in flour

fold gently

spoon it into the greased idli plates

place it in idli plates and steam

now it is done

remove it



  1. Can we replace butter instead of curd and oil? If so, can u tell me the quantity to use

    1. No curd has to be used. You can use melted butter instead of oil

    Instead of maida can i use wheat flour and instead of sugar palmsugar or brown sugar? Just for a healthy version of this choco idli

  12. Mam I'm a great fan of yummy tummy. I wanna try something in cooking I check out your recipes and start doing it. You are great. I recently tried this recipe, but came out like idli not like fluffy cake.Somewhere something has got wrong in the proportions of ingredients I guess. But I add all the ingredients as per you have mentioned.I don't know what went wrong. Can you give me any suggestions regarding it mam..
