Thinai Kara Pongal Recipe - Foxtail Millet Pongal Recipe

This is my latest favourite recipe. I love pongal a lot. I make it quite often too. Since hubby and me dont eat rice these days, i used thinai for making this and it was like super hit. I never missed rice in this. It tasted really yummy.

I served this with my all time favourite  pumpkin sambarit was so delicious. You can have it with coconut chutney or tomato chutney as well.

Preparation Time : 5 mins
Cooking Time : 30 mins
Serves : 3 to 4


Thinai / Foxtail Millet - 1/2 cup
Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - 1/4 cup
Water - 3 cups
Salt to taste
Ghee - 1 tsp

For Seasoning:

Ghee - 1 tblspn
Black Pepper - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1/2 tsp
Cashew - 5
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Green Chilli - 1 chopped
Curry leaves - 1 sprig


Take ghee in a pan, add foxtail millet and moong dal and roast for 1 min. Take it in a bowl and add water to it. Now place this inside a pressure cooker which has some water in it and pressure cook for 10 to 12 whistle. Now turn off the heat and let the steam go by itself. Open the cooker and remove the bowl carefully from it. Open it and mash it roughly.

Now heat ghee in a pan, add all seasoning ingredients and fry for a min.

Add the cooked millets and salt. mix well.

Serve with chutney or sambar.

roast for a min

take it in a bowl

add water

i placed it inside a pressure cooker which has water in it.

cook till done

heat ghee in  a pan

add everything in

roast for a min

add the cooked millets in

add salt

mix well
