Arisi Paruppu Sadam Recipe - Healthy Dhal Spinach Rice Recipe

This is a healthy main dish for lunch. It has dal, rice and spinach in them and taste really delicious with some pickle and papad. I love it hot with a drizzle of ghee over it. YUM.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 45 mins
Serves: 3 to 4


Rice - 1 cup
Dal - 1/2 cup ( i used masoor dal)
Oil - 2 tblspn
Ghee - 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
Dry Red chillies - 2 broken
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves a handful
Onion - 1 large chopped
Garlic - 10 peeled
Tomato - 1 chopped
Salt to taste
Turmeric Powder/ Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Spinach - 3 cups chopped
Water - 3.5 to 4 cups
Coriander leaves a handful finely chopped


Wash and soak rice and dal for 30 mins.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add mustard, cumin, dry red chilli, asafoetida and curry leaves.

Add in onions, garlic and saute for 2 mins.

Add in tomatoes and mix well,

Add in salt and turmeric and mix well.

Add spinach and mix well.

Add drained rice and dal, along with water.

Bring it to a boil and cook for 3 whistle and simmer and cook for 5 mins. Turn off the heat and let the steam go by itself.

Add coriander leaves and ghee and mix well.


Wash dal and rice
soak for 30 mins

prepare your other ingredients

heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker

add mustard, cumin and dry red chillies

add a good amount of asafoetida

add turmeric powder

add lots of curry leaves

add onions and garlic

saute for couple of mins

add tomatoes

mix well

add salt and turmeric powder

mix well

add in some spinach

mix well

add the drained rice and dal

add water

bring it to a boil

cook till done

add ghee and coriander leaves

mix well
