It is made using fresh cranberries, but I used dried and the result was amazing. I boiled it in cranberry juice and the jelly turned out yum. You can have it with toasted bread, dinner rolls, biscuits, roast turkey or roast chicken.

It's an incredibly easy sauce and makes it perfect for busy days or special occasions. Whether serving it for meals with roasted turkey, chicken or using it as a spread or for making flavourful recipes like cranberry sauce bread, cranberry sauce muffins, cranberry scones, this recipe is worth making it from scratch.

Try it once and you'll know how it tastes so fresh and healthy compared to the store bought ones. Plus, making it yourself lets you adjust the sugar according to your taste.

    Ingredients

Dried cranberry - You can use fresh or frozen cranberries for this recipe. But dried cranberries make the process quick and easier. Since they are already dried, they cook faster and make the sauce rich, fruit and slightly tart flavoured.

Cranberry juice - The juice helps to soften the dried cranberries while cooking and bring out its natural taste and flavour. You can also replace it with orange juice if you want a citrusy, sweet taste.

Sugar - Cranberries are naturally tart, so sugar is added to balance the sharpness. It also balances the overall flavour without overpowering natural cranberry taste.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Take dried cranberries in a sauce pan.

    2)Pour in cranberry juice.

3)Place on heat and bring to a full boil. Cook and simmer for 15 minutes.

    4)Add in sugar.

    5)Cook until it thickens.

6)Mash the sauce slightly and cranberry sauce is ready.

7)Cool the mixture, store in an air tight container in fridge.

    Expert Tips

    • Add orange zest or cinnamon powder to have extra flavour.
    • Adjust the sugar according according to your taste.
    • Soak the dried cranberry in hot water for a few minutes before mixing with juice.
    • Let it cook until cranberries are soft and juicy.
    • If preferred, leave it chunky, or blend for a smooth sauce.

    Storage & Serving

Let the sauce cool completely before storing. Transfer them to an airtight container or jar and refrigerate for 10 days. You can also freeze them for up to 1 to 3 months. Just thaw them before serving it.

Serve this cranberry sauce with roasted chicken, turkey or use as a sandwich spread, pancake spread or mix it with your everyday oatmeal.

    FAQ

    Q. Do I need to soak dried cranberries first ?

It is not necessary, you can start simmering them directly in the juice as long as they get soft and plumpy.

    Q. How long does dried cranberry sauce last ?

Well, if it is properly stored and refrigerated in an airtight container, it lasts for 10 days. It also freezes well for longer storage.

    Q. Can I add flavouring to the sauce ?

Yes you can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg powder to give a warm flavour to the sauce without overpowering.

    Q. Do I need to use any thickening agent like cornstarch ?

No, the sauce thickens naturally like a jam without any agent.
