Halloumi cheese is very new to me, I have never used it or tasted it until few years back. The first time I tasted it is in a salad which had ice berg lettuce, pomegranate, cherry tomatoes, cucumber with honey mustard dressing. It tasted so good which made me try this recipe.

Fried halloumi or halloumi fries is the first recipe which I decided to make. I breaded it the usual way and fried until crispy. Since halloumi cheese tends to be salty, I paired halloumi fries with a honey chilli mayonnaise. The combination was too good to resist. This makes a light dinner along with some side salad & tzatziki.

    What is Halloumi?

Halloumi is a popular cheese from Cyprus, Greece & Turkey. It is a hard salty cheese which has high melting point which makes it ideal for frying or grilling. The cheese tends to have a squeeky texture to it when fried. The cheese is made with cows, sheep and goat’s milk. Halloumi cheese is used more often in salad, served as an appetizer.

    About Halloumi Fries

Halloumi fries makes a delicious appetizer or snack for parties or gatherings. Halloumi fries can be baked or fried as per your preference. I like it to be fried since it gets super crispy. Since it is a salty cheese, you can serve it with some kind of sweet dipping sauce.

Cut the halloumi into fingers like pieces. Dip them in a flour batter and coat with panko breadcrumbs. Fry the fingers till crispy and serve with honey chilli mayonnaise. You can flavour the halloumi with any spices, dried herbs you like.

Halloumi cheese - use fresh halloumi for making the fries. It is best to use cheese in brine which tends to have more flavour.

Seasonings and herbs - Italian mixed herbs, paprika or chilli powder and salt is the only spice mix I used to flavour the batter.

Breadcrumbs - panko breadcrumbs makes this halloumi fries super crispy and crunchy.
