Amma’s Mangai Avial / Raw Mango Avial / Raw Mangoes Cooked in a Spicy Coconut Masala

Amma goes crazy for this avial, she loves it all the time. Whenever she sees a mango lying around the first thing she ask me is “can we make mango avial today”. I like this, but not so crazy like her. If you like sweet, salt and spicyness all combined in your dishes then this is the answer. This is one of her speciality and everyone in my family ask her to cook it whenever they drop in.

With no more delay off you go to the recipe.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 30 mins
Serves – 3 to 4

Ingredients:

Raw Mango – 1 large chopped
Turmeric Powder / Manjal podi – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar – 1 tblspn

For Grinding:
Coconut – 1 cup
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam –  1tsp
Chilli Powder or Dry Red Chilli – 1 tsp or 2

For Tempering:
Oil – 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku – 1 tsp

Method:

Take all your ingredients in a blender and make into a slightly coarse puree.

Take mangoes, salt, sugar and turmeric powder in a kadai. Cover with water and cook for 15 mins till the mangoes are half done.

Now add in the coconut masala and add some water and cook for 10 more mins till the mangoes are completely cooked.

Now make the seasoning, by heating oil and add in mustard seeds. Let this crackle for a min.

Pour this over the avial and mix well.

Serve with rice and any gravy.

I made this today. My friend came to visit and brought me a big bag of dried mangos. They were so good, but had to be used quickly, because the expiry day was close. So I simmered them in hot water for a bit and used them like fresh mangoes to make this avial. At first my husband was surprised that it was so sweet, because usually I don't make sweet avials, but we both enjoyed it. I served it with some hot masala rice.
