I have a little craze towards middle eastern foods…Even if it is the simple pita bread or chicken shawarma ..I love it all day…
And talking about shawarma…It is my favorite…HUH..I should make it soon…
Now coming to todays recipe..This is the most famous dish all over mediterranean cuisine…This is a kind of chickpea pattice which is deep fried..This is either served as a wrap for pita bread or as a snack…

The best combo for this is tahini sauce..I was searching a good recipe for this all over the net and found a awesome recipe from Edible Garden…It is a lemony tahini sauce…

So here is the step by step recipe for you..Hope you like it..
Ingrediants:
Chickpeas / Channa- 2 cup Soaked Overnight
Onion-1
Cilantro / Coriander leaves-1 cup
Mint leaves / Pudina-1 cup
Garlic-4 cloves
Cumin powder/Jeera powder-1 tsp
Coriander powder / Malli podi-2 tsp
Chilli powder-1 tsp
Pepper powder-1 tsp
Baking powder-1 tsp
Lemon -2 tblspn
Salt to taste
Breadcrumbs- ½  cup
Oil for deep frying
For Tahini Sauce:
Tahini-2 tblspn(Recipe below)
Lemon -1 tsp
Garlic-1 clove grated
Salt to taste
For Making Tahini:
Take 1 cup of sesame seeds and toast it in a pan till it gets light golden and toasted..Take it in a blender and powder it..Add some salt and grind it again..Pour some olive oil through the funnel and blend it till it gets smooth and creamy..Store this in fridge..
Method:
Take chickpeas, onions, cilantro, mint, garlic, chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, pepper powder ,baking powder, salt, lemon juice in a blender and make into a smooth paste.
Tip this into a mixing bowl and add in some bread crumbs and mix well.
Make this into shape of vadas and fry them in medium hot oil till golden brown.
Serve it with tahini sauce..
For Tahini Sauce:
Mix tahini, lemon juice, garlic and salt till it gets into a smooth sauce..Serve it with falafil.
Pictorial:
Take all your ingrediants for falafil
Add chickpeas in blender
add all other ingrediants
make into a fine paste
Empty it in a mixing bowl
add some breadcrumbs
mix it up
Form pattice
Fry them in oil
Till golden…
Drain it in a paper towel…
Now for the tahini sauce..Take all your ingrediants
Mix everything
to a smooth paste
Serve…
Don’t forget to serve some falafils
Done…
Nice Fluffy,Herby falafil…Totally Delicious

Oh these are some good. Forty years ago I made from a mix and loved falafel. I couldn't get tahini so substituted peanut butter.
Your recipe is terrific, I never used coriander powder before.
I really appreciate your tutorial on tahini. It is very expensive in the store but reasonable made from the seeds.
I also used to use a bottled cucumber salad dressing on the falalels in pita halves.
    Thank You for sharing this.

Aarthi,You are doing a wonderful job by educating/sharing so much of your knowledge in cooking.I always peek into cookery blogs to get new ideas and improvise. You are amazing with your pictorials and explanations.

Kudos …btw the falafels are tempting and i will give a try soon. The chickpeas can be ground as is or can it be cooked after soaking to not have that crude taste?

@padshebNo chickpeas shouldn't be cooked. It should be soaked and used. If you cook it, it will not turn crispy

This snack is great. Although, you could make a small change to make it even better and crispy. Instead of mixing the breadcrumbs, first make small patices and then dip them in breadcrumbs. This can really make them crispy and also looks great!! Try it… 🙂

Hi Aarthi.. I came across this site through one of my friend. Actually we are a group of gals (may be ladies;) ) who are college buddies.. and almost all of us are regularly visiting your site and trying out different stuffs… you are really amazing person ! we love your recipes.. they are very simple and can come handy in busy life of working mothers..I have tried out many cakes, breads and other items.. today i thought of making pita pocket with falafel. My bad luck.. i dint soak chikpeas 🙁 then my eyes fell on the groundnuts .. those with the shells still on.. i thought of trying my luch with that .. to my wonder.. it tasted amazing.. better than the ones i get from falafel factory 🙂 🙂
Keep up the good work dear.. May God bless you …

Hi Aarthi, I tired this recepie using canned chickpea we get here in UK. The mixture became too thin and I used another can if chickpea to thicken it also used breadcrumbs but dint work. It became too thin and the entire stuff disintegrated in the oil n the oil was like a mixture spread into oil. Dono how to set it right now.

Are the bread crumbs necessary in the recipe or it can be okay without it?

    Hi Aarthi
I tried this recipe today, though it tasted gud,we felt it was uncooked inside.
The outer layer was v.dark brown though,so can't b cooked more.
Is it how the dish turns out?
