About French Toast (Egg & Eggless)

French Toast is easy to whip up on busy mornings when you don't have much time on hand. Even that simple french toast can be made different ways. All of them taste fantastic. I have shared versions and variations of making french toast in this blog post.

Making french toast requires minimum ingredients like bread, eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla. I would suggest you to allow the bread soak up the custard really well and also fry the french toast on a low to medium heat till it is cooked in the inside as well as outside.

In this blog post I have shared recipe for making french toast eggless.

How to Make French Toast (Step by Step Guide)

The Custard: prepare the custard by mixing eggs, custard powder, sugar, milk, cinnamon and vanilla.

The Bread: use thick slices of brioche, challah or texas bread slices. Use slightly stale bread for best result. The key point is to use thick slices of bread.

If you don't have thick cut bread slices. Use two bread slices together and dip them in the custard and cook. This makes the bread stick together and create a thick slice of bread.

Soaking: soak the bread on both sides in the custard for at least 5 mins. So the bread absorbs the custard really well.

Butter: make sure you cook french toast in plenty of butter. butter makes everything better.

Cook low and slow: cook the french toast low and slow so it gets cooked in the center properly.

Finishing in Oven: always finish cooking your french toast in oven. this way the french toast cooks from inside and outside.

Pro Tips for Best French Toast Recipe

    Choosing the Right Bread

Brioche Bread - use Brioche loaf and slice it into thick slices. This bread is so soft and fluffy. Brioche also has a sweet and buttery flavor.

Challah - braided bread. The dough has lot more eggs than regular bread which gives beautiful yellow colour.

Texas Bread - Texas toast is a thick cut bread that soaks up the custard better.

White Bread - If you don't have thick cut bread slices. Use two bread slices together and dip them in the custard and cook. This makes the bread stick together and create a thick slice of bread.

Use two days old bread or slightly stale bread for making french toast which absorbs the custard better which results in the best french toast.

    French Toast Custard

I used custard powder for my french toast. If you don't have custard powder use one egg yolk. Soak the bread in the custard longer than usual, so the bread absorbs all the custard.

    Cooking French Toast

Cook the french toast in very low heat on both sides, else the toast may burn on outside. Cooking on low heat will make the centre of the french toast cook and set.

Baking the cooked french toast in oven will make the french toast cook from inside and gets fluffy.

    French Toast Topping Ideas

You can serve french toast with

    1. Salted Caramel Sauce
    2. Strawberry Compote
    3. Blueberry Compote

    Leftovers & Make Ahead

Cooked French Toast can be stored in fridge for 4 to 5 days. You can store cooked french toast in freezer for upto a month. Warm them in microwave for few seconds.

How to Make French Toast (Stepwise Pictures)

1)Take custard powder in a bowl. If you don't have the custard powder, add in 2 egg yolks.

    2)Add in little milk

3)Mix well so the custard powder is mixed lump free.

4)Take eggs in a bowl, add in the custard powder mixture.

5)Add in sugar. Instead of sugar you can use honey or maple syrup.

6)Add in cinnamon powder. If you don't like cinnamon flavor you can simply skip this.

7)Add in vanilla extract. Vanilla adds a floral aroma to the french toast which is strongly recommended.

    8)Pour in milk

    9)Mix this together to combine.

11)Pour half of the egg custard mixture into a large dish.

12)Place bread slices on top. I used my homemade brioche bread slices.

13)Pour the remaining egg mixture over the bread. Make sure you pour this gently and little at a time. The bread will soak all the custard mixture.

14)Set aside for 5 mins so the bread absorbs the egg mix.

15)Melt some butter in a pan. Place the bread and cook on a very low heat for at least 3 to 4 minutes. Flip over and cook on other side for 2 to 3 minutes.

16)Once cooked, place the french toast on a wire rack.

17)pop it into the oven and cook for 8 to 10 mins.

18)Now french toast is cooked. This method of finishing the french toast in oven will make sure the french toast gets cooked even in the centre and makes it fluffy.

19)Place the warm french toast on a serving platter. Top with your favorite fruits of choice. Drizzle with syrup and enjoy.

    20)Enjoy immediately.
