About Korean Street Toast (Gilgeori Toast)

Korean street toast is a popular street food dish in Korea. It is known as gilgeori toast in Korea. Gilgeori means street in Korean. This is a delicious Korean sandwich made with lots of veggies and egg. Perfect to put in lunch box. It is simple to make and taste absolutely delicious. This street toast has an addition of sugar added in them which makes it super duper good. Street toasts in Korea were highly popular and it look very big and loaded with tons of veggies for 5000 won.

I like to use cabbage, carrots, spring onions, garlic chives in the sandwich. Traditionally green cabbage known as yangbaechu is added, you can add 1 sliced onions as well. For more filling toast, you can add a slice of cheese, ham on top of the vegetable patties which adds more taste to the sandwich.

Korean street toast consists of toasted bread, egg vegetable patties, cheese, tomato ketchup and some sugar. The key point you have to remember is to load the patty with lots of vegetables which is important for the taste. Bread has to be toasted till crisp in butter. There has to be some kind of sweetness added in the sandwich like a layer of jam or a sprinkle of sugar. Condiments like ketchup, mustard and kewpie mayo.

    Korean Street Toast Ingredients

    ingredients for Korean Street Toast

Bread Slices - For traditional Korean toast, white bread slices is used. But for a healthy alternative, you can use whole wheat bread. You can toast the bread in a toaster or in a pan with butter. Make sure your bread is toasted till crispy.

Vegetables - I like to use cabbage, carrots, spring onions, garlic chives in the sandwich. Traditionally green cabbage known as yangbaechu is added, you can add 1 sliced onions as well.

Egg - Egg in this recipe is used as a binding for vegetables rather than an ingredient. For 1 to 1.5 cup of vegetables you need 1 egg.

Butter - For getting authentic taste in the sandwich, you have to cook the whole sandwich in butter. Bread is toasted in butter and the vegetable patties is cooked in butter.

Condiments - I used only tomato ketchup. But some recipes using kewpie mayo as well.

Sugar | Jam - There has to be some kind of sweetness added in the sandwich like a layer of jam or a sprinkle of sugar. If you are using jam, apply a thin layer on top of the bread. Sprinkle sugar over the vegetable patties.

Optional - extra shredded cabbage can be topped over the vegetable patties when cooking. For more filling toast, you can add a slice of cheese on top of the vegetable patties which adds more taste to the sandwich.
