Upma Kozhukattai Recipe / Rice Rava Kozhukattai Recipe / Arisi Rava Kozhukattai Recipe / Pidi Kozhukattai Recipe

This has become one of my favorite kozhukattai, it was so soft in texture and i loved the taste of that too. I am a big fan of steamed dumplings, i have quite a few recipe here in my blog too. You can check out all of them here.

This recipe was on my mind ever since i made rice flour at home, That is because i got some rava like rice while i sieved the rice flour. I transfered that in a air tight container and store it in fridge to make kozhukattai with it. And couple of days back i made it too. It was delicious..

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves : 3 to 4

Oil - 1 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Raw Peanuts - 1 tblspn
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - 1/4 tsp

Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Dry Red Chilli - 2 chopped finely
Ginger - 2 tsp grated
Coconut - 1/4 cup grated
Rice Rava / Arisi Rava / Broken Rice - 1.5 cup
Salt to taste
Coriander Leaves - 3 tblspn finely chopped
Water - 3 cup

Heat oil in a kadai. Add in mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, asafoetida, peanuts, dry red chilli and saute for a min.

Add in grated ginger and saute for 30 sec.

Add in water, salt, coconut and bring it to boil.

Simmer and add in rice rava(recipe below), keep mixing till it leaves the sides and come as a mass.

Remove it to a bowl and let it cool down.

Now make it into kozhukattai shape and place it in a steamer plate and steam for 10 mins.

Remove it and let it cool to handle.

Serve with chutney.

How to make Rice Rava:

Take 1.5 cup of ponni rice, you can use any rice which you cook. Soak it for 1 hour, drain it and spread it on a clean cloth under the sun for 3 to 4 hours till it is dry.

Now take the rice in a blender and blend them for few mins, sieve it.

You will get fine powder while you sieve, that is rice powder. You will get rava like mix on the sieve, that is rice rava.

Store that in a air tight container in fridge.

  1. very handy and nicely made kozhukattai's... love it..

  2. Hi Aarthi,
I have seen so many rice kozhukatti's while googling, but never had the courage to try it. Since this post after seeing pictorial procedure Im thinking about giving a try. I got some doubts, hope you can clarify. 1. Do i need to roast the rava before storing or cooking? 2. What about the sidedish for this?

    Have a nice day Aarti.
    Love to Maha.

  3. @Surya BoseNo you dont need to roast the rava, and you can have it with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.

  4. Hi Aarthi, what makes ur recipes special and easy to follow are the pictorials
I follow ur recipes and I think u do an awesome and consistent job.

  5. My mother used to add Tuvar dal , jeera and dry red chilies to rice and grind into coarse powder and then make uppuma and then make Into kozhukattai.
My mother inlaw used to soak rice and kadalai paruppu separately overnight and grind into fine dough. Then in a kadai add oil, urad dal, kadalai paruppu, sambhar onions, green chilies and nicely mix to form a mass, then make rounds and steam it.
Ofcourse coconut added in both preparations.
So two different preparations both equally tasty, filling and healthy.

  6. Hi Aarthy, Today I tried Arisi Upma. It came out well. Happy new year 2016.
