My love for simple bread with butter and jam never fades. I truly enjoy anything made with bread or bun slathered in butter. So when I came across this recipe, I wanted to try it immediately. I first made it for an Instagram reel, and the response was amazing. Everyone loved it, which is why I decided to add the recipe to the blog as well.

    About Bun Maska

Bun maska is a popular, Indian snack made with soft,  sweet bun generously slathered with butter (maska), traditionally served with a hot cup of Irani chai (tea). It originated in the Irani cafes of Mumbai and Hyderabad.

The recipe is super simple, choose fresh bun so the maska bun taste so soft and pillow like. Some times I like to use raisin sweet buns or tutti frutti stuffed buns.

For best taste use salted butter and whip the butter with powdered sugar and sweetened condensed milk till fluffy. Apply whipped butter over the sliced buns both inside and on the outer part as well. Be generous with the butter filling. You can adjust the sweetness level according to your taste.

Bun maska is best served with Irani chai. If you enjoy this recipe, you will love my bakery style butter bun and Madurai butter bun

    Components of Bun Maska

The Bun - a soft pillowy slightly sweet bun is used for making bun maska. Since the buns are untoasted, Fresh buns are preferred.

The Maska - butter is creamed with powdered sugar and sweetened condensed milk to create a creamy and fluffy mixture. I like to add a drizzle of vanilla extract for flavour and taste.

Accompaniments - pair bun maska with hot cup of Irani chai for nostalgic taste.

    Ingredients

Bun - choose soft fresh buns for this recipe. You can use sweet buns, tutti fruity buns or raisin buns as well. Make sure it is fresh and soft.

Butter - unsalted butter is preferred for perfect balance of taste.

Sugar and Sweetened condensed milk - some recipes uses only sugar but I like to use some sweetened condensed milk for taste.

Vanilla extract - optional, but highly recommend for taste.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Mix together soft butter with powdered sugar, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla till creamy and fluffy.

2)Using an electric beater makes this process easy and faster.

3)Take your soft buns, slit them in the middle.

4)Apply generous amount of the sweetened butter on the buns both sides

5)Apply on outer slit side to resemble cafe style bun maska.  Cut them in half and serve with Irani chai.

    Expert Tips

Butter - Use salted butter for the best taste. Make sure the butter is soft but not melted, as this helps it spread evenly. High-quality butter is highly recommended, and if you're using white butter, even better- it gives the most authentic flavor.

Bun - The recipe is super simple, choose fresh bun so the maska bun taste so soft and pillow like. Some times I like to use raisin sweet buns or tutti frutti stuffed buns.

Variation - you can spread a layer of jam for a different unique taste. Some recipe also uses thickened malai or cream as filling.

Storage & Serving - bun maska is best served immediately as soon as it is assembled. Leftover can be stored in an air tight container at room temperature upto 24 hours. For longer, store in fridge, bring back to room temperature before serving. Enjoy bun maska with Irani chai or Masala chai.
