    Battenberg Cake Recipe

This is one cake which i wanted to bake for quite a long time. Finally i achieved it last week and i wanted to share it as soon as possible. This is one cake which you can bake on any special occasions, it makes the occasion even more special.

    About this Recipe

Battenberg cake, also known as checker board cake (with either cake or square added at the end), is a light sponge cake with different sections held together with jam. The cake is covered in marzipan and has a distinctive two-by-two check pattern alternately coloured pink and yellow when cut in cross section. Because of their
resemblance to a cake, the large chequered patterns on emergency vehicles in the United Kingdom are officially known as Battenburg markings.

Battenberg cake has also been called church window cake, checkerboard cake, and domino cake. The first cake was baked in 1884 to commemorate the marriage of
Prince Louis of Battenberg to Princess Victoria, Queen Victorias granddaughter and Prince Philips grandmother. Early Battenbergs had up to 25 squares, and according to food historian Ivan Day, the simplified four-panelled cake appeared when large industrial bakers such as Lyons got into the Battenberg game.

I made this cake from scratch, even the template. But you can take a shortcut and use this ready template, print it and use it. The cake pan which you have to use is a 18 cm standard round cake pans.

    Ingredients for Checkerboard Cake Recipe

    • All Purpose Flour / Maida - 4 cup / 480 grams
    • Granulated Regular Sugar - 2 ¾ cup / 550 grams
    • Oil or Melted Butter - 1 ¼ cup / 300 ml
    • Milk - 1 ¾ cup / 420 ml
    • Eggs - 6
    • Baking Powder - 4 ½ tsp
    • Salt - 1 tsp
    • Vanilla Essence - 1 tblspn
    • Cocoa Powder - ½ cup / 60 grams
    • Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting as needed (Recipe here)

All Purpose Flour / Maida :
Maida requires more oil or butter when baking or cooking because it is lighter and rises faster, which is why bakers prefer maida to atta.

All-purpose flour can be used for a variety of tasks, including baking, cooking, coating meats and vegetables, and thickening sauces and gravies. To manufacture all-purpose flour, a blend of hard wheat (which has more gluten) and soft wheat is crushed together.

    Milk:
Milk serves several purposes in baked goods. It provides liquid to hydrate the dry ingredients, adds flavour, aids browning, and softens texture.

    Cocoa Powder :
Cocoa powder is primarily used as a flavouring agent in baked goods such as cookies, ice cream, dairy drinks, and cakes. Aside from flavouring, it is also used in the production of coatings for confectioners or frozen desserts. Cocoa powder is also used in the beverage industry, for example, to make chocolate milk.

      Hi aarthi
I tried this cake for my sons birthday. It was my first time and I have to admit I had some issues. My cakesnwere too crumbly for some reason due to which my outer rings broke. I ended up with a crooked cake. Thankfully the checkerboard effect was good and tasted better than it looked from outside.
Inspite of refrigerating the cakes i dont know why my sponges were crumble and sticky. But thankyou for making this complicated saga so much easier. The theme for my sons bithday was checks and this was perfect.

If you could tell me my error I would be gratrfull.
