So yesterday, I was going through my to do recipes, and found this sauce lying in the corner waiting to be made. Immediately I got into actions. I made it in less than 20 minutes everything came together beautifully. Now I have a jar of homemade sweet chilli sauce to enjoy with spring rolls.

    About Sweet Chilli Sauce

This sauce is one of those pantry essentials that instantly elevates a dish. It has a mild heat from dried red chilies, a subtle garlic kick, and a perfect balance of sweet and sour from sugar and vinegar. Making it at home is not just cost-effective but also lets you control the spice level and avoid preservatives found in store-bought versions. The best part? It comes together in under 25 minutes and can be customized to your taste.

Why this sauce is a favorite - If you enjoy Asian flavors, this sauce is a must-try. It’s sweet, slightly spicy, and has that perfect garlicky kick that makes it so addictive. It’s also super versatile—you can use it as a dip, drizzle it over noodles, or mix it into stir-fries. Plus, once you see how easy it is to make, you might not want to buy it from the store again.

Thai Sweet Chilli & Garlic Sauce is a great way to add extra flavor to your meals. Whether you’re serving it as a dip,, drizzling it over fried rice, or using it as a glaze for grilled chicken, it brings a lovely balance of flavors. Plus, it’s made with basic ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.

    Why This Recipe Works

Simple & Quick: This sauce requires minimal effort and is ready in under half an hour.

Versatile: Works as a dip, marinade, or even as a base for stir-fry sauces.

No Preservatives: Unlike store-bought versions, this is made with fresh ingredients and no unnecessary additives.

Adjustable Spice Level: You can control the heat by increasing or decreasing the number of dried red chilies.

    Sweet Chilli Garlic Sauce Ingredients

Dried Red Chilies: These bring the spice and deep red color. Soaking them softens them for blending.

Garlic : It gives a bold, aromatic flavor that balances the sweetness.

Water : It is used for blending and adjusting consistency.

Vinegar: It adds tanginess and helps to preserve the sauce. White vinegar works best.

Sugar : It provides the sweetness that balances the heat.

Salt : It enhances all the flavors and keeps the sauce from tasting flat.

Cornstarch : Helps thicken the sauce to a smooth texture.

    Hacks

Control the Heat: You can soak the dried chilies longer for a milder taste or use fresh chilies for extra heat.

Make it Thicker or Thinner: You can adjust the cornstarch slurry to get the consistency you prefer.

Enhance the Flavor: You can add a little soy sauce for depth or a squeeze of lime juice for extra freshness.

Storage Tip: You can store it in an airtight glass jar in the fridge, and it will last for months.

    Variations

Honey Sweet Chilli Sauce: You can replace half of the sugar with honey for a deeper sweetness.

Extra Garlic Version: Double the garlic for a stronger garlicky taste.

Ginger Twist: You can add a teaspoon of grated ginger for extra warmth and spice.

Soy-Infused Sauce: You can add a teaspoon of soy sauce to give it a richer umami flavor.

How to Make Sweet Chilli Sauce (Stepwise Pictures)

    Take all your ingredients
Boil water in a sauce pan
Take dry chillies in a bowl
Pour in boiling water over this
Let it steep for a while
Now take the chillies along with water in a blender
    Add garlic cloves in that
    Add in sugar
    And some salt
    Pour in vinegar
    Time to blend this
    Blend them
    It will look watery
Pour that into a sauce pan
    Boil it up
Let it boil for few mins
    Boil till the flavour infuse
    Now take cornstarch
    Mix it with water
Pour that into the sauce pan
    Mix that well
Boil it till it gets  little thick
At a point, the sauce will double boil
    Allow to cool down
    YUM..

    Expert Tips

    • You can use a blender or food processor to get a smooth consistency. If you prefer a chunkier texture, pulse it instead of blending fully.
    • Always use a dry spoon when taking the sauce out of the jar to prevent spoilage.
    • If the sauce thickens too much after cooling, add a splash of warm water and stir before using.

    Storing & Using

Let the sauce cool completely before transferring it to a clean, airtight jar. You can store it in the fridge, and it will stay fresh for months.

    FAQ

    1. How long does this sauce last?

It stays fresh in the fridge for up to 3 months if stored in a dry, airtight container.

    2. Can I use fresh chilies instead of dried?

Yes, but the sauce will have a slightly different flavor and won’t be as deep red in color.

    3. Can I make this without cornstarch?

Yes, but the sauce will be thinner. If you prefer, you can let it simmer longer to naturally thicken.

    4. Is this sauce very spicy?

It has a mild to medium heat level. You can adjust the spice by adding more or fewer chilies.

This was delicious. The chicken cooked up very crispy. I steamed sugar snap peas and threw them in at the last minute. Great flavor. I made the sweet chili sauce, too. Easy , healthy and yummy.
