Salted chaas is a simple and refreshing Indian drink made with curd, water, black salt, spices and fresh coriander. I grew up having curd with almost every lunch and during hot summer days, we would often turn it into a chilled glass of chaas.

    About Salted Chaas

Chaas, also called mor or sambaram in South India, is a simple everyday drink. It is just curd mixed with cold water, salt and a few spices. I usually add roasted cumin powder, green chilli and a plenty of fresh coriander for extra flavour.

I have always loved curd and we have it almost everyday at home. We enjoy it in so many ways like curd rice, raita, mor, mango lassi or simply plain in a bowl.

During summer, I love turning curd into a cold glass of chaas. I have also shared similar refreshing recipes on my blog like neer mor (spiced buttermilk), which is another favorite summer drink at home.

For making chaas, just blend or whisk everything together and your drink is ready in minutes. I love serving it with lunch or sipping on a chilled glass in the afternoon. It is one of those simple homemade drinks that feels so refreshing when the weather is hot.

    Ingredients

    • Yogurt / Curd : I used thick, chilled curd which gives a creamy texture and tangy taste. You can use homemade or store bought yogurt.
    • Roasted cumin powder : Roasted cumin powder gives the drink a nice aroma and helps with digestion.
    • Black salt : Black salt gives the drink chatpata taste.
    • Ice cubes & cold water : Ice cubes and cold water used to dilute the curd and make the drink extra chilled.
    • Coriander leaves : Coriander leaves added for fresh aroma and flavour. It also adds a nice pop of color to the chaas.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Take curd in a blender jar.

2)Add in cumin powder. I used roasted cumin powder.

3)Add black salt to taste. Black salt helps with digestion. if you don't prefer to use black salt, you can add regular salt.

4)Add few ice cubes to make the buttermilk cold.

5)Pour in a cup of cold water.

    6)Blend this till creamy.

7)Pour into serving cups. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • Use fresh, thick curd for the best taste and texture. Avoid using too sour curd.
    • Always use chilled water for a cool and refreshing drink.
    • Adjust the amount of water depending on how thick or light you like your chaas.
    • You can adjust the black salt and cumin powder according to your taste.

    Storage and Serving

Salted chaas tastes best when served fresh and chilled. If needed, you can refrigerate in a jar or glass bottle for a day. Give it a good stir or shake before serving.

    FAQ

    Q. Can I make chaas without black salt ?

Yes, you can simply use regular salt instead. The taste will be slightly different but still delicious.

    Q. Can I use mint instead of corainder ?

Absolutely ! Mint also gives the chaas a fresh and cooling flavour. You can also use a combination of both.

    Q. Can I add ginger to the chaas ?

Yes. Add a small amount of grated ginger if you like a little extra flavour and spice.
