South African Fish Curry Recipe - Mchuzi Wa Samaki Recipe

This is a delicious south african fish curry recipe. It is flaky fish cooked in a coconut milk sauce. Delicious and mild and taste just amazing. I served it with fragrant turmeric rice and it was yum.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 30 to 40 mins
Serves: 4


Fish Pieces - 500 grams
Oil - 5 tblspn
Onion - 2 large chopped finely
Ginger - 1 tblspn grated
Garlic - 1 tblspn grated
Tomato - 2 chopped finely
Tomato - 2 pureed
Chilli Powder - 2 tsp or to taste
Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
Cumin Powder - 2 tsp
Coriander Powder - 1 tblspn
Curry Powder - 2 tlspn
Garam Masala Powder - 1 tsp
Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Sugar -1  tsp
Tamarind - 1 small gooseberry size 
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Coriander leaves a handful finely chopped
Coconut Milk - 2 cup


Soak tamarind in water for 10 mins. Squeeze and extract all the juices.

Apply salt and pepper on fish pieces and mix well. Set aside.

Heat oil in a pan, place fish in oil and sear on both sides, remove it and set aside.

Now in the same oil, add onions and cook till golden brown. Add ginger and garlic and saute for couple of mins.

Add in tomatoes and tomato puree and cook till oil separates. Add curry leaves and mix well.

Add in spice powders and a little water to make sure the spices dont burn. 

Now add in tamarind juice, salt and sugar and mix well.

Add in coconut milk and mix well. Bring it to a boil.

Add the fish pieces back in and simmer it for 10 mins.

Add coriander leaves and mix well.

Serve with rice,

Take all your ingredients

take your fish pieces

season with salt and pepper

mix well

heat oil in a pan

place fish pieces in

sear till golden

drain and set aside

in the same oil

add onions

cook till golden

add ginger and garlic

mix well

add chopped tomatoes

and tomato puree

mix well

add some curry leaves

mix well

cook till oil separates

ad all spice powders

along with little water

mix well

cook till oil separates again

add tamarind juice

mix well

add salt

coconut milk


add water if needed, i didn't add any, because i wanted it to be thick

add the fish back in

mix well

cover and simmer

now it is done

add coriander leaves

mix well

  4. HI Aarthi, I am a big fan of Indian recipes and I really like the ones you have on your blog. Just to let you know that what you have as a South African recipe is actually a Kenyan recipe. Its from the Coastal part of the country so it should named a Kenyan fish curry. Mchuzi wa samaki is Swahili for fish curry...
