    Peas pulao is a popular North Indian rice dish. It is made using a combination of basmati rice, green peas, spices cooked in ghee. These taste amazing with any spicy curries. Learn how to make Peas Pulao Recipe with step by step pictures and video.

    Peas Pulao Recipe 

    I make this pulao very often, it is my go-to pulao recipe when I make gatherings, party or even to pack in kids lunch box. You can make this pulao in a pressure cooker, regular cooking pot or even in rice cooker. It is such a forgiving recipe and everyone will love it.

    About Peas Pulao (Matar Pulao)

    Pulao is a simple rice dish from North India. it is very popular and made on a regular basis. Pulao is a made by a mixture of rice, vegetables, whole spices and ghee. Usually pulao is very mild in taste without addition of heavy spice powders. Whole spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cumin is added for aroma. 

    Spice powders are restricted but occasionally it is used. Readymade pulao masala is added to create a tasty pulao, but you can use homemade pulao masala, I have shared the recipe below.

    Pulao Masala Recipe

    Recipe for pulao masala is very simple. Combination of spices is roasted on a low flame till fragrant and then powdered in a spice grinder.

    Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, fennel seeds, star anise, cumin seeds and black pepper is added in pulao masala.

    These spices are taken in equal portion except cardamom and cloves which are added ¼th. Roast all these spices are roasted dry till fragrant and powdered in a blender.

    Peas Pulao Ingredients

    Ghee - use a combination of ghee and oil for making the pulao. It adds. so much flavour and taste.

    Whole Spices - fennel seeds, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves adds flavour to the pulao.

    Onion - sliced onions should be cooked till golden brown to imparts sweet flavour to the pulao.

    Green Peas - you can use fresh or frozen green peas for the pulao.

    Spice Powder - you can use turmeric, chilli powder and garam masala powder.

    Coconut Milk - you can use either coconut milk or milk for the rich flavoured pulao.

    Basmati Rice - make sure to soak basmati for at least 30 minutes before making pulao.

    How to make Peas Pulao (Stepwise Pictures)

    1)heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker. you can use regular cooking pot.

    2)Add in whole spices and allow them to splatter.

    3)Add in sliced onions and green chilles cook them for few minutes.

    4)Cook this till onions gets slightly golden brown.

    5)Add in ginger garlic paste and mix well.

    6)Once the onions gets golden. Lets proceed.

    7)Add in turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala powder.

    8)Mix the spices for few seconds, allow them to bloom.

    9)Add in cashews and raisins. Mix this really well.

    10)Add in green peas. Mix well into the masala.

    11)Now the peas are cooked.

    12)Add in the soaked strained basmati rice.

    13)Toss the rice with the spices.

    14)Add in water.

    15)Add in coconut milk.

    16)Season with salt.

    17)Bring this to a full boil.

    18)Cover and cook.

    19)Fluff the rice and serve.

    Expert Tips

    • Instead of using fresh green peas, you can use frozen green peas as well.
    • You can skip the chilli powder if you want your pulao to be white.
    • A small amount of chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves can be used for flavour.

    Equipment

    • Pressure cooker

    Ingredients

    For Tempering

    • 1 tbsp Ghee
    • 1 tbsp Oil
    • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
    • 1 inch Cinnamon
    • 3 no Cardamom
    • 2 no Cloves

    For Making Peas Pulao

    • 1 large Onion sliced thinly
    • 3 no Green Chillies slit
    • 2 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
    • 1 cup Basmati Rice
    • 1 tsp Chilli Powder
    • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
    • 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
    • Salt to taste
    • 2 tbsp Cashews
    • 2 tbsp Raisins
    • 1 cup Coconut Milk
    • ½ cup Water
    • 2 cup Green peas

    Instructions

    • Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker. Add in whole spices and let it sizzle.
    • Add in onion, green chillies and saute till golden. Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min. Add in spice powders and salt. Add in peas, cashews and kishmish and mix well.
    • Now add in rice, water, coconut milk.
    • Bring it to a boil. Cover it and simmer for 10 mins. Turn off the heat and Let the steam go all by itself. Fluff the rice and serve.
