Kids can be very picky eater. Specially maha is too much. When I started this series of showcasing kids lunchbox on my blog. I had to be realistic. Also if you are looking for baby food recipes, check it out.
In this post I have shared oven 60+ lunch box recipe for kids. This lunch box is inspired from mostly south indian, north indian and easy to put menu. Rice is a staple so mostly you would be seeing variety rice, sandwiches, idli, curries. Every kids lunch box would include carb, protein, fruits and vegetables which make the lunch box healthy and wholesome.

About Kids Lunch Box
Kids lunch box or generally lunch box is a mind boggling topic. There are so many ways to pack a lunch box. Each country has their own way of packing their lunch box upon their food preference.
Indian lunch box usually consists of some kind of roti, rice, sabzi, dal and protein. There are thousands of idea on packing kids lunch box. You can pack it as per their food preferences and their likes and dislikes. I like to pack easy to make and simple meals which they enjoy eating.
Things to keep in mind when packing school lunch box recipes for kids
Packing lunch box can be really fun if you get the hang of it. In some schools they offer lunch at school. But I like to pack my own lunch for my kids. Even though there are tons of ideas all over the internet. I like to keep it simple and pack only food which my kids enjoy eating.
- Never experiment - Even though you can be creative to some extent. but I don't like to try any new food items which they haven't tried before. Because there are chances that kids won't prefer to eat them.
- Keep it Vegetarian - I like to add egg in my kids lunch box. But I never pack poultry or non vegetarian items. Since it can cause food poisoning or bad odour when unboxing the lunch box.
- Always taste what you are packing. Make sure the meals are properly seasoned and in correct consistency.
- Pack a well balanced meal.
How to Pack a Lunch Box
- Always prepare your meals right before packing. Even though you can do a little meal prep if you don't have much time.
- Make sure you use sustainable containers for packing. I prefer stainless steel lunch box.
- Make sure the food is at its optimum freshness when packing.
- The meals should be balanced with fruits, vegetables, carbs, protein and nutrition.
- You can pack pastas or soups in thermos to retain its consistency and to make sure the food stays warm.
- Make sure the water is boiled and cooled or use proper filtered water.
- Foods which can melt or changes its consistency can be avoided.

Lunch Box 1 - Peas Rice
During busy mornings it has to be easy on time to make and pack lunches. This is one such lunch box. A simple lunch which I packed for maha. Peas pulao and boiled eggs in her lunch box. Boiled peanuts on her snacks box.

For making waffle cheese sandwich. I just put some grated mozzarella in between bread slices and toasted them in sandwich maker. Making sandwich in waffle maker will give you this lovely pattern. Which kids will love it.

Lunch Box 6 - Pink Curd Rice
Pink beetroot curd rice with potato fry in her lunch box. Orange in her snacks box.
Maha had little cold so I put some oranges in her snacks box. Since oranges are rich in vitamin c which is good for relieving cold or cough.
I sauted some finely grated beetroot in a tsp of ghee for few mins. Add it to curd rice and mix well. Now attractive curd rice is done. Curd rice itself has not much nutrients so addition of beetroot makes it more colorful and healthy.

Lunch Box 8 - Spinach Corn & Cheese Sandwich

Lunch Box 9 - Tri Colour Idly

I mixed grated carrots, grated beets and chopped spinach in idli batter. Steamed them as usual in mini idli plates. This is a great way to include veggies in your kids diet.
For chutney. Grind, tomato, garlic, a small piece of beetroot, chilli powder, salt and some sugar. Heat oil and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal and asafoetida. Pour chutney in and boil for 5 mins.

Lunch Box 12 - Rasam Rice
Rasam sadam with potato varuval in her lunch box. Always make rasam rice liquidy so it taste best during lunch time. Bauli moonfills from @bauliindia and cranberries in her snacks box. I make rasam rice very runny and I don't have to worry about the rice getting cakey.
Lunch Box 13 - Chapati & Paneer Butter Masala
Chapati and paneer butter masala on her lunch box. Ragi bites in her snacks box. Ragi bites is soulfull brand.
This is how I make paneer butter masala in 10 mins. This is how I made PB masala. Grind tomato, chilli powder, cumin powder, garam masala pdr, salt, sugar till smooth. Heat butter and add cumin seeds. Add tomato mix and cook for 3 mins. Add in paneer and cook for 2 mins. kasuri methi leaves and cream. Mix well. Done.
Lunch Box 14 - Carrot Rice
Today's lunch box is Carrot rice with Broccoli poriyal and Veg mayo sandwich for snacks box.
For carrot rice, cook rice and set aside to cool down. Heat ghee, add in a small piece of cinnamon, cardamom and fennel seeds. In goes grated garlic and mix well. Add in grated carrots and saute for 3 to 4 mins. In goes chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder and garam masala powder. Add salt and mix well. Add cooked rice and mix well. Serve.
Lunch Box 15 - Banana Roast
Sambar rice with potato poriyal in her lunch box. Caramelized banana (Nendrapazham roast) in her snacks box.
Lunch Box 16 - Okra Fry
Curd rice with ladies finger poriyal on her lunch box. Cheesecake brownies and cashews in her snacks box. Made this brownies yesterday and it was one killer recipe.
Lunch Box 17 - Paneer Pulao
Paneer pulao with onion raita. Mangoes for her snack box.
Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add onions , carrots, beans and saute for 2 mins. Add ginger garlic paste and saute for another min. In goes chilli powder, turmeric, garam masala, cumin powder and some salt. Basmati rice goes in and paneer. Pour water. Add 2 cups water for 1 cup of rice. Bring it to boil and boil for 3 mins till most of the water is gone. Cover and pressure cook for 1 whistle. That's it.
Lunch Box 18 - Dal Rice
Rice mixed with moong dal, ghee and cauliflower poriyal. Bread jam butter toast cut into heart shapes in her snacks box. An healthy and tasty lunch box for kids.
Lunch Box 19 - Lemon Rice
Lemon rice and beans poriyal in her lunch box. Boiled peanuts on her snacks box. Lemon rice is a easy and great option to pack in your kids lunch box as it stays good for a long time. Beans is rich in fiber so it is very good for us. Boiled peanuts is a healthy snack which is rich in antioxidants.
Lunch Box 20 - Aloo Paratha
Aloo paratha with toasted paneer and homemade ketchup. On snacks box I added mangoes.
FOR ALOO PARATHA: I just added little bit of chilli powder, roasted cumin powder, salt and garam masala powder with boiled potatoes. Mashed well and stuffed into chapati dough and made paratha.
FOR TOASTED PANEER: I mixed lemon juice, chilli pdr, garam masala pdr, cumin pdr and salt with cubed paneer and mixed well. pan fried it in a tsp of ghee.
Lunch Box 21 - Veg Fried Rice
Veg fried rice with carrot, beans is for lunch. On her snacks box, it is egg sandwich which I grilled in the sandwich toaster. Just an egg omelette placed inside two slices of bread which has a little mayonnaise applied.
This is how I made fried rice. Saute some chopped onions and garlic in some butter. Add carrot, beans along with salt and little bit of sugar. Saute for 3 to 4 mins. Add in soy sauce and mix well. Add in cooked rice and toss well. In goes black pepper to taste and mix well. Done.
Lunch 22 - Carrot Poriyal
Curd rice with grated carrots, carrot fry made as maha's preference and her all time fav garlic pickle. Apples and banana on her snacks box. Mix some lemon juice or honey with apple to prevent them discolouring. Got up a little late so made curd rice as it is the easy thing to do. Hiding carrots or little grated cucumber is curd rice is a great idea and make curd rice taste amazing.
Lunch 23 - Sweet corn Chaat
Carrot Mini Idli, Quail Eggs & Sweet Corn Chaat. Cute mini food themed lunch box. Mini carrot idli with idli podi (check this link for idli batter). For snacks box it is boiled salted sweet corn
I added little finely grated carrots to the idli batter and made mini idlies. I greased the idli plates with little ghee so the idlies don't stick. Put few plain mini idlies in the lunch box too.
Maha likes idli podi so for dipping I gave her that. Again quails egg is maha's favorite. quails egg are high in vitamins and minerals than regular eggs. so it is a great food to include in your kids diet.
I used frozen sweetcorn. Boiled them in salted water and drained completely before putting in lunch box.
This lunch box has protein, fiber, vitamin, carb, minerals and fat.
Lunch 24 - Beetroot Chapati
Beetroot Chapati, Rolled Egg Omelette in lunch box and banana in snacks box. A healthy fun packed lunch box for kids. They will love this colourful lunch box for sure. Banana
I added some beetroot puree when making chapati dough. It gives bright coloured chapati. She calls it pink chapati.
Egg rolls are a great way to pack eggs in lunch box. Since omelette can be hard for them tear and eat. Also boiled eggs can get boring sometime. This omelette stays together well and it is like a mini bite.
This lunch box has fibre, protein, carb, fat. Beetroot is rich in folic acid and iron. This is a great way of making kids eat beet. And Banana is rich in potassium.

Lunch 25 - Carrot Chapati
Carrot Chapati, Quail Egg, Potato patties and Eggless mayonnaise for dipping. For Snacks box I put sweet banana chips
Potato patties is very easy to make. I peeled one small potato and grated it. Then add salt, pepper, oregano and some cornflour. Mix well. Heat a pan with some butter, spoon some of the mix and spread like a patty. Cook till golden on both sides.
Maha likes quail eggs, quails egg are high in vitamins and minerals so it is a great food to include in your kids diet. This lunch box has protein, vitamin, carb, minerals and fat.
Lunch Box 26 - Veggie Wrap
Mixed vegetable wrap or veggie wrap is a delicious recipe to include vegetables in your kids diet.

Homemade chocolate cupcakes and cashews on her snacks box. This lunch box is one of her favorite as she loves chapati and paneer. It is packed with fiber and calcium. Paneer is very good for us especially growing kids as it is rich in calcium which makes them strong.
Lunch Box 28 - Chicken Mayo Sandwich
Dal Rice, Carrot Poriyal & Chicken Mayo Sandwich. This lunch box is maha's absolute favorite. She loves Dal rice and with carrot poriyal it is best combo. And i made her favorite veg mayo sandwich.
Lunch Box 29 - Kurkure Bhindi
Rasam makes a great lunch option. But one thing you have to do is when mixing rice with rasam make it more runny, Because at the time of lunch, rice would have absorbed all the rasam. So it might turn hard. Recipes here : Rasam, Ladies finger fry
For snacks box, i just boiled some green gram with some salt and drained it. I added that to the snacks.Mung beans are high in important vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber
Lunch Box 30 - Stir Fried Egg Rice

Vegetable and egg rice, Potato smiley with Homemade ketchup
Cook some basmati rice with little salt and turmeric added. Set aside to cool. I stir fried garlic in some butter. Added beans, capsicum and carrot in it and sauted for 2 mins. Then added in cooked rice with some salt and pepper. This is packed with carb, protein and vitamins.
Lunch Box 31 - Banana Chapati
Banana chapati, Scrambled eggs, Potato Tots & Popcorn is in this lunch box. I have added simple kids friendly potato tots recipe in this. It is fast, easy and quick potato dish which kids will absolutely love it for sure. Instead of frying, you can try air frying it as well.
I mashed a ripe nendran pazham (Kerala banana). Add salt and mix well. I then added wheat flour and mixed to a dough. Then made chapati as usual and cooked in ghee.
For potato tots or tater tots. Peel and grate a potato, squeeze out extra water. Add salt and oregano. Shape into small ball tightly. Fry in oil. This lunch box is filled with Fiber, protein, carb, antioxidants and fat

I am trying to make maha eat wraps. So it will easy for me to put any filling inside roti so it will make a filling meal. This is my first experiment, I put a simple egg omelette inside and rolled. I made egg omelette by beating one egg with salt and pepper. Then cooked omelette in a spoon of butter. She needs something to dip for sure. So I gave her my homemade Eggless mayo. French fries is her all time favourite. I know she will finish that. Maha enjoys raw carrot than cooked ones.
Sweet corn is always a hit on snacks box. I boiled frozen sweet corn in salted water for 1 min. Drained and added it to the lunch box. This meal is packed with protein, fiber, carb and vitamins.

I added grated beetroot to boiling water and then strained the liquid. Then used the hot liquid to make the dough. I mixed regular idiyappam and beet idiyappam together to make it more appealing. Again quails egg is high in nutrition than regular egg and it looks cute. I want her to finish the lunch box, so I put few m&m's as a bribe.

Lunch Box 39 - Hidden Veggie Pasta

I added carrots, capsicum, tomatoes in the pasta sauce. You can any veggies you have into the sauce, they will never find it. The pasta itself is very creamy and yummy. I made the muffin yesterday. It has lots of veggies in them too. I am sure whether she will like it or not. So I put some orange pieces in the lunch box. This lunch box is packed with nutrients from veggies, carb, fat and vitamins from oranges.

Banana swirl bread I made it yesterday. I cut it into small cubes and put in her snacks box. Maha is not into sweet stuffs a lot. So I wasn't sure if she will eat the bread so I put cornflakes too.

Best ever combination in lunch box. Curd rice, kurkure bhindi and soft boiled eggs. For soft boiled eggs, bring water to a boil. Add in eggs in boiling water. Cook for 6 mins. After 6 mins remove it and immerse in cold water. Now you have perfect soft boiled eggs.

You can wrap hot rotis in parchment paper to prevent it from drying. Even though you can use aluminium foil I don't recommend it because it is not a eco friendly product.

Kids lunch box with compartments and lunch box with thermos is available in the market which can be used to pack. I do prefer to use stainless steel or BPA free plastic container to pack.

Wide variety of lunch box ideas are available all over pinterest. You can refer those and modify it as per your kids eating preferences.
4)Is it okay to pack non-vegetarian foods?
Keep it Vegetarian - I like to add egg in my kids lunch box. But I never pack poultry or non vegetarian items. Since it can cause food poisoning or bad odour when unboxing the lunch box.
