Chicken Gravy Recipe - South Indian Chicken Gravy Recipe

I have been looking for a chicken gravy for pulav, naan which is thick, little on the sweeter side and little spicy and masala like. Finally my athai(aunt) gave me a recipe for the delicious chicken gravy and ghee rice which is served in wedding. Immediately i tried it and loved it to the core..

Preparation Time : 15 mins
Cooking Time : 45 mins to 1 hour
Serves: 6 


Chicken - 1 kg with bone cut into small pieces
Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn
Turmeric Powder - 2 tsp
Garam Masala Powder - 2 tsp
Salt to taste
Yogurt / Curd - 1/2 cup
Lemon Juice - 2 tblspn
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tblspn

For Masala:
Oil - 5 tblspn
Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tblspn
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp
Cinnamon / Pattai - 2 cm piece
Onion - 4 large sliced thinly
Capsicum - 1 large sliced thinly
Tomatoes - 4 large sliced thinly
Ginger Garlic Paste - 2 tblspn
Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn
Kashmiri Chilli Powder - 3 tblspn
Coriander Powder - 2 tblspn
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Garam Masala Powder - 1 tblspn
Tomato Ketchup - 1/4 cup
Green Chilli Sauce - 2 tblspn
Soy Sauce - 1 tblspn
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves a big handful finely chopped


Mix chicken with the marination ingredients and set aside for 30 mins. Now take this in pressure cooker, add 1 cup of water and mix well. Cover and pressure cook for 2 whistle, lower the flame and cook for 10 mins. Now turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself.

Now heat oil in a kadai, add in fennel, cumin and cinnamon.

Add in onions, salt and saute till lightly golden.

Add in capsicum and tomatoes and cook covered till mushy.

Now add in the spice powders and mix well.

Add in ketchup, soy sauce and green chilli sauce and mix well.

Add in the cooked chicken with any liquid and mix well.

Now simmer this for 10 to 15 mins.

Add in coriander leaves and mix well.


Take chicken in a bowl

Add in chilli powder, turmeric powder and
 garam masala powder

add in salt

add little ginger garlic paste

add in yogurt / curd

add in lemon juice

Now give this a good mix

mix well..set aside for 30 mins

Take chicken in a pressure cooker

Add in water and cook till done

Take all your ingredients

Heat oil in a kadai...add in spices

Add in sliced onions

season with salt

saute till done

Add in capsicum and tomatoes

cook till done and mushy

Take half the mix in a blender and puree..

Puree till done
Add it into the kadai

add in ginger garlic paste

Mix well

cook till oil separates

Add in spice powders

Mix till oil separates

Add in tomato ketchup

Add in green chilli sauce

add in soy sauce

mix well

now the chicken is done

add it in

mix well and simmer for 10 mins

now the chicken is done

add in coriander leaves

mix well
