Fig Jam Recipe, Fresh figs are only in season for a very short time, so I always love to make a batch of fig jam that lasts all year long! This jam is so addictive with just using only 2 ingredients and hardly takes 10 minutes to prepare. It’s perfect for spreading on a toast or a sandwich or even you can serve them along with a cheese platter.

Figs are really good for you. I made this jam for Amma. I decided to add little sugar to it. Thought of adding jaggery in this, but i ran out of it. So I added demerara sugar and it turned out yummy. Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you.

    About Fig Jam

Figs are a unique fruit known for their sweet taste and chewy texture. They are rich in fiber and vitamins. Figs can be enjoyed fresh or dried. These can be used to make jams, dessert, milkshakes etc. Fig jam is incredibly versatile. It’s a wonderful spread on toast or crackers, paired with cheese, especially goat cheese, or it can be used as a filling for pastries or even served as an accompaniment to grilled fruits.

WHY I LOVE THIS RECIPE - Fig jam is not only a tasty treat but also a wonderful way to preserve the flavours of fresh figs. Whether enjoyed on its own or as part of a dessert platter, it brings a touch of sweetness and satisfaction to any dish. With its simple preparation and delightful taste, making fig jam at home is a rewarding culinary experience!

The process of fig jam usually involves combining figs and sugar in a saucepan, bringing them to a boil, and then simmering until the mixture thickens. You can test the consistency by placing a small spoon of jam on a chilled plate, when you push it with your finger, if it comes together, then the jam is ready !

After years of buying countless store bought jam, now I started to make my own jam jars with no added preservatives. It was a game changer and also tastes out of this world ! I usually store them in a glass jar. This beautiful jar of jams also makes great gifting options for the upcoming holiday season!

    Why This Recipe Works

Fig jam is a delightful spread made primarily from fresh figs and sugar. It’s a versatile treat that can enhance a variety of dishes from breakfast toast to cheese platters.

Natural pectin : Figs generally contain a good amount of natural pectin in it. It is the key ingredient in achieving the jelly-jam consistency. There is no need to add any artificial flavouring agents and preservatives.

Versatile : This jam recipe is so versatile. You can try making jam using any seasonal fruits of your choice. It can be made as sweet or savoury, adding nuts of your choice etc.

Multipurpose : This jam can be used or incorporated in multiple ways. You can spread them in your toast, or in your cheese platter as a dip or as filling for your muffins, pastries etc.

    Ingredients

Figs : Figs are the heart of the jam that provides a unique sweetness and a slightly chewy texture with their tiny seeds. Always use fresh figs for making jams. Their natural sugars and pectin content contribute to the jam’s thickening process.

Sweetener : I have used demerara sugar, as I ran out of regular sugar. You can add any sweetener of your choice like honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, jaggery. The amount of sugar can be adjusted to balance the figs sweetness and also according to your taste buds. The sweetener plays a crucial role in the preservation process, as it helps the jam to set and extend its shelf life.

Lemon Juice : In the jam making process, generally lemon juice is added. As its acidic nature helps to balance the sweetness and elevate the taste and freshness of the jam, making it more vibrant.

    Hacks

Sterilizing the glass jars : Sterilizing the jars is crucial for preventing mold and bacterial growth, which ensures your fig jam has a good shelf life. First wash the jars, then place them in a boiling water pan and completely submerge the jars. Carefully remove the jars after 10 minutes. Drain and dry them completely before storing the jam.

Cooling plate : Chill a small plate in the freezer before starting to make the jam. This is known as the “cooling plate test” method, which is a reliable method to check if the jam has reached its consistency without using a thermometer.

Fig Jam (Step by Step Pictures)

    First Take a plate
    Place it in freezer
I always keep the jam jar and pickle jars at home, they are heat proof..Now to sterlize this, cover with water and boil it for 5 mins

Remove it and set aside to drain

You need some figs and sugar..I used demerara sugar..
You can use jaggery or normal sugar too

Take ¾ th of the figs in a blender

    puree smoothly

    pour it in a pan

add in ¼th of chopped figs

    add in sugar

    mix well

    the sugar will melt down

    now keep mixing it

    it will get thick

    the colour will darken too

now the jam is almost done

pour some jam over a frozen plate..

When you bring it together it will come like a jam

    Now fill your jar

cover it and put it in fridge.
