Sundakkai Vathal Kuzhambu & Chutta Appalam Recipe - Vatha Kuzhambu Recipe

I have shared sundakkai vathal kuzhambu recipe before. But in that i used vathakuzhambu podi. This recipe is using the normal spice powders which is available at home. It is so easy and so tasty. 

For vatha kuzhambu the perfect combo can be steamed rice and chutta appalam (roasted papad). So here i thought of showing the combo.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 30 to 40 mins
Serves: 4


Gingelly Oil - 1/4 cup
Dried Tukey Berry / Sundaikkai - 3 tblspn
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida / Hing / Kaya Podi - 1/8 tsp
Curry leaves a small handful
Onion - 1 large sliced 
Garlic - 10 cloves peeled
Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn
Coriander Powder - 3 tblspn
Turmeric Powder / Manjal Podi - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Jaggery - 1 tblspn
Tamarind - 1 lemon size
Water as needed
Papad for toasting


Soak tamarind in water for 5 mins, squeeze and drain the pulp.

Heat oil in a earthernware pot, add in turkey berry and fry till golden. Drain and set aside.

Now add in mustard, urad dal, cumin, curry leaves and asafoetida in it.

Add in onions, garlic and saute for a min.

Add in tamarind water, spice powders, salt and jaggery. Mix well. 

Now bring this to a boil and simmer for 15 mins or so.

Now serve with papad. For toasting papad, show the papad over open flame using a tongs and keep flipping so it gets evenly toasted on all sides.

Remove and serve.

Take all your ingredients

Heat oil in a pan

add in dried turkey berry..sundakkai

fry till crispy

remove it

set aside in a bowl

In the same oil

add in mustard, cumin and urad dal

add in curry leaves

add in asafoetida

fry for a min

add in onions and garlic

fry for a min

add in tamarind water

add some more water

give a good mix

Add in chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder

mix well

boil it

add in salt and little jaggery

add in the berries

mix well

boil till it gets thick

now it has got thick


Now lets make the chutta appalam or toasted papad
take your papad

toast it on open flame

keep flipping and keep toasting

it will slowly gets toasted


store it in a air tight container

This taste great with the vathal kuzhambu and rice
