Vendaya Kozhukattai Recipe - Fenugreek & Urad Dal Dumplings - Kids & Toddler Snack Ideas

Giving too much deep fried snacks for your kids is not at all a healthy option. It results in young age obesity in kids which results in so many diseases. Instead of fried foods bring the habit of enjoying healthy foods in your kids. I am hunting for healthy toddler recipes, This is one of the traditional steamed dumplings which is rich in protein and is very good for growing children and even adults. You can make this as a after school snack or put in your kids lunch box of snacks box.

Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you..

Preparation Time : 15 mins

Soaking Time : 1 hour
Cooking Time : 15 mins
Makes : 8 to 10 dumplings

Rice - 1/2 cup
Urad Dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 3 tblspn
Fenugreek Seeds / Methi / Vendayam - 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Fresh Coconut - 1 cup grated + more as needed
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1 tsp (optional)
Whole Pepper - 1 tsp crushed (optional)

Take rice in a bowl, take urad dal and fenugreek seeds in a bowl and wash well. Now soak this separately for 1 hour.

First take dal and fenugreek seeds in a mixer and add little water at a time and make it into a very smooth paste. Dont add too much water.

Now add drained rice in the dal and grind it till the rice is blender The rice wont be ground into a smooth paste. Little grainy is not a issue.

Now take this mix in a bowl, add in 1 cup of fresh coconut and mix well.

Now take some coconut in a plate, wet your hands in water, take small [portion of this batter and coat it in coconut and place it in a steamer plate or idli plate.

Now steam this for 15 mins.

Remove it and serve hot.

You can add some crushed cumin seeds and pepper to the batter and mix well and  make dumplings for little spicy version.

1) Dont add too much water when grinding, if you find the batter to be thin, then add some rice flour to get the consistency right.

2)Add a good amount of fresh coconut in this, if you are making this for older people then reduce the coconut amount.

You need rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds

Take rice in a bowl, dal and fenugreek in a bowl

wash well and soak this in water for 1 hour

now it is soaked

drain the dal and fenugreek and add it to a blender

add little water and make it into a smooth puree...Dont add too much water,

now add in drained rice and grind it

grind till the rice is almost blender

Can you see bit of grainy rice..this is how it should be

the batter has to be very thick..so add water little by little when grinding..
If you find your batter thin, then add some rice flour

now to this add lots of  grated coconut

add in salt

mix well

now take coconut in a plate

dip your hands in water

take small portion of the mix

coat it with coconut

like this

place it in a steamer plate...wash the steamer plate before placing the
dumplings  so you dont have to grease it

Now place this in a steamer and steam

If you want little spicy version, add cumin and crushed pepper in this mix

shape the same way and steam them

Now it is cooked..insert a knife, if it comes clean then it is cooked

Serve hot
