The cake is so moist and gooey. The whole point is the cake is baked till it is so moist and has a syrup like sauce underneath which creates a sticky sauce. You have to check my Microwave Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding Recipe.

    About Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding

This is one of my favourite thing to make whenever I feel like eating something chocolaty and sweet. I love it so much that I have to share it here for sure.

I made this pudding just now and served it with cold ice cream. I should tell you this, It is addictive. Each mouthful just gave me the wonderful flavour of chocolate and rich sticky taste.

Self saucing pudding literally translates to a pudding cake with a naturally formed sauce underneath. It happens because of an alarming amount of hot water that is poured over the cake.

A simple and thick batter is formed with plain flour, sugar, cocoa, butter, milk and baking powder. A dry topping of sugar, brown sugar, cocoa is sprinkled over the cake. Now pour boiling hot water over the cake, this creates the sticky sauce once baked.

The recipe starts by making an eggless cake batter using basic ingredients. The cake batter is supposed to be thick. Spread it on a greased baking tray.

Then a simple topping is made with cocoa, sugar and brown sugar. When you pour the hot water over the topping and bake, it magically makes a self saucing sauce. The sauce is thick, sticky and sweet.

This pudding is so good when served with ice cream.

    Ingredients

    • Plain flour - I used all purpose flour for this recipe which makes the cake layer.
    • Sugar - granulated sugar or brown sugar can be used in the cake batter.
    • Cocoa - try to find unsweetened cocoa powder.
    • Baking powder - a small amount of baking powder, helps with the lift of the cake.
    • Milk - use full fat milk to make the cake batter rich and thick.
    • Butter - You can use oil or butter, but I prefer melted butter which makes the cake super rich.
    • Topping - brown sugar, white sugar and cocoa powder is used for the topping which in fact makes the sauce.
    • Hot Water - You can use plain hot water or hot black coffee for making the sauce.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Dry Ingredients

1)Take plain flour and cocoa powder in a bowl. Since the cake taste depends heavily on the cocoa, try to use the best quality you can afford.

2)Add in baking powder into the flour.

3)Add in a pinch of salt. You can add some instant espresso powder or coffee powder.

4)Add in sugar. I am using granulated sugar, caster sugar can be used.

5)Mix this well using a spoon. This is your dry ingredients. Make a small hold in the center.

    Make Cake Batter

6)Now add in wet ingredients directly into this. First pour in melted butter.

7)Pour in milk. try to use full fat milk and not low fat.

8)Mix the dry with the wet. The batter formed will be slightly thick, it is too thick, you can pour in little extra milk.

At this point you can add in some chopped chocolate chunks or chocolate chips, if you want it more chocolaty.

9)Transfer this to a butter greased oven safe dish.

10)Spread the thick batter evenly on the dish. Set this aside for a moment.

    Make Topping

11)Take cocoa powder in a bowl. This is unsweetened cocoa.

12)Add in granulated sugar and brown sugar.

13)Mix this well. This is your topping for the cake.

    Making Self saucing sauce

14)Sprinkle this topping evenly over the cake. Make sure it is in even layer.

15)You can add some butter cubes now if you want a rich silky buttery sauce.

16)Now pour over boiling hot water over this gently. This part is what create the self saucing sauce.

17)Now gently take the cake pan and place into the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

    18)This is how it looks.

19)Serve the pudding with some ice cream or whipped cream.

    Individual Serving Self Saucing Pudding

20)You can bake this as individual serving sizes as well. Just pour into ramekins and bake. It is easy to serve and great for parties.

21)The baking time for mini ramekin size pudding would be around 15 minutes.

hi, I have a recpie and the quantities i have for the same recipe is the same as yours except for the timing -- mine says 40 mins and you say 20 mins , becoz I do not want to open the oven after 20mins incase it is not cooked s,.pl let me know.
Should the pudding be fan forced or on regular bake?
one more thing, mine says, I can sprinkle the cocoa and sugar at the bottom, top with batter and then pour the hot water on top -- seems ok to me but I am confused as I am doing it for the first time Can u help? I really want to make this one.
