Kuthiraivali Vegetable Pulao Recipe - Barnyard Millet Pulao Recipe

This is a simple pulao which i made using barnyard / kuthiraivali..Very healthy and pretty easy to make as well. I used barnyard millet for this, you can use varagu , samai or any millet as you like.

Cooking Time : 25 mins
Serves : 2 to 3


Barnyard Millet / Kuthiraivali - 1 cup
Oil or Ghee - 2 tsp
Bay Leaf - 1
Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam - 1/2 tsp
Cinnamon / Pattai - 1 small piece
Cardamom / Yelakai - 1
Onion - 1 medium size sliced thinly
Green Chillies - 2 chopped
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tblspn
Mint Leaves - 1/4 cup chopped finely
Coriander Leaves - 1/4 cup chopped finely
Carrot - 1 medium size cubed
Beans - 5 chopped
Capsicum / Bell Peppers - 1/2 chopped
Salt to taste
Water - 1.5 cup


Wash millet really well and soak it for 15 mins or so

Heat oil in a cooker. Add in all the whole spices and let them sizzle.

Add in onions, chillies and cook till golden. 

Add in ginger garlic paste and saute for a min.

Add in carrots, beans and capsicum and saute for a min.

Add in the drained millet and toss well in the oil...Add in water, salt and mix well.

Cover and simmer. Pressure cook on a very low heat for 10 mins. 

Turn off the heat and let the steam go all by itself. Open the cooker and fluff the rice.

Take all your ingredients

Wash the millet well

soak it in water for 15 mins

Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker

Add in all the whole spices

Saute for a min or so

Add in onions and chillies

saute for a min

add in ginger garlic paste

add in some chopped mint and coriander leaves

add in capsicum, beans and carrots

toss well

drain the millet

add the millet into the oil

toss well in the oil

cover with water

mix well

add in salt

mix well and bring it to a boil..Simmer and cook

now it is done

fluff the rice
