I wanted to create a version that suited my taste, with flavours I absolutely love, and this recipe turned out even better than I expected. I loved it so much that it has now become something I make quite often.

    About Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are one of my family favorites. Most of the time we just steam and have it. But I have made few sweets in the past using sweet potatoes like this sweet potato gulab jamun and sweet potatoes in jaggery.

I have made mashed potatoes and mashed tapioca in the past but sweet potato mash is very new to me. I really like the idea of it. So when I was developing this recipe, i wanted the sweetness of the sweet potatoes to shine.

I wanted to enhance the sweetness and incorporate good amount of butter into it as well. So I decided to go one step further and brown my butter. Because brown butter always enhances the taste of baked goods. Make sure to use salted butter which makes all the difference. Also I used honey instead of brown sugar which adds a subtle sweetness.

The combination of brown butter and honey takes this simple sweet potato mash to a whole new level. The brown butter adds a beautiful nutty, toasted flavour, while the honey brings a lovely natural sweetness that makes every spoonful irresistible.

Whether you serve it for a holiday feast or as a special side dish for your regular family meals, this mashed sweet potato will instantly elevate your table!

    Ingredients

    • Sweet Potatoes - choose fresh and best quality sweet potatoes for this recipe. You can use Japanese sweet potatoes too, in that case you need to reduce the honey amount.
    • Honey - You need some kind of liquid sweetener for this mashed potatoes. Honey or maple syrup works best.
    • Salted Butter - I used salted butter for this sweet potatoes which adds the perfect amount of salt in the mash.
    • Milk - milk is warmed and added into the mash to make it creamy. You can use half milk and half cream or half and half for adding more creamy rich texture.
    • Vanilla Extract - a dash of vanilla totally enhances the taste of the mash.

    Step by Step Pictures

    Steaming Sweet Potatoes

1)Start by steaming sweet potatoes. I like to scrub them really well, halve them and place them on a steamer basket. Steam cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the sweet potatoes is completely cooked and tender. Remove them from steamer and allow them to cool for 10 minutes so it is easy to handle. Peel off the skin from the sweet potatoes and set aside in a bowl.

    Brown Butter

2)While the sweet potatoes are steaming, make the brown butter for the mashed potatoes. Take salted butter in a sauce pan. If you don't have salted butter, you need to add salt into the mash.

3)Place on medium to low heat. Cook until the butter is completely melted.

4)Once the butter is melted, continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes on low heat until the milk solids in the butter is toasted to dark golden brown. The butter will smell nutty and turned into golden brown colour. This is your brown butter, set aside.

    Mashed Sweet Potatoes

5)Now take your steamed and peeled sweet potatoes in a large bowl and use a potato masher or potato ricer to mash them completely.

6)Once potatoes is mashed, add in the honey or maple syrup, melted brown butter, vanilla extract and mix well.

7)You can taste this at this point and adjust the honey or maple syrup.

8)Now warm your milk slightly and add to the mashed potatoes little a time and mix well. It should get creamy, fluffy and thick.

9)Thats is mashed sweet potatoes are done. Taste and adjust the maple syrup.

10)Keep the mashed potatoes warm by placing it over a bowl of simmering water until ready to serve. Enjoy.

    Expert Tips

Sweet potato - choose fresh best quality sweet potatoes for this recipe. You can use Japanese sweet potatoes as well.If you are using japanese variety, you might need to reduce the honey because those potatoes tends to be on the sweeter side.

Brown Butter for taste - one of the most important step in this recipe is the brown butter. Take your time to do that, because that toasty brown butter adds so much caramel like nutty flavour to the mashed potatoes which makes them so good. Make sure to use salted butter, if you don't have salted butter, add some salt into the mash.

Sweetener - You need some kind of sweetener to enhance the sweetness of the mashed sweet potatoes. I prefer liquid sweetener like honey, maple syrup. you can use brown sugar also. But it will affect the colour of the mash.

Milk - milk is warmed and added into the mash to make it creamy. You can use half milk and half cream or half and half for adding more creamy rich texture.

    Storage, Reheating and Serving

Storage - Any kind of mashed potatoes tends to get super thick and dry as it rests and cools. So keep them warm to prevent this from happening. Keep the mashed potatoes warm by placing it over a bowl of simmering water until ready to serve.

Leftovers and Reheating - Leftover can be stored in fridge upto a week. You can add more melted butter and hot milk at the time of serving to bring it back to the proper texture.

Serving - Enjoy mashed sweet potatoes on its own or with a side of grilled meat or protein or choice. This mashed sweet potatoes can be served as a dessert as well.
