Looking for baked cheese recipe for your party, don't worry you are in the right place. This baked camembert cheese is the next best that could happen in your life. Sweet salty, full of flavour, this baked and cheesy goodness is a blanket for your toast.

    Baked camembert

One day, I picked up a packet of Camembert cheese for the first time and decided to bake it. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of placing it on a large baking tray, and the cheese completely melted away, leaving behind only burnt bits. It was such a disappointing experience!

But I gave it another try, this time baking it the right way, and I was instantly blown away by how delicious it was. Since then, baked Camembert has become a staple in our home and one of those little indulgences we keep coming back to.

    What is Camembert?

Camembert is a rich, creamy, soft cows milk cheese from Normandy region of France. It has an edible white rind and a soft interior. Camembert is usually sold in individual portions often in a small wooden box. You can enjoy it on its own at room temperature, in a cheeseboard. But for best taste, bake them and enjoy with toast.

    About Baked Camembert

There is no much better way to enjoy this soft cows milk cheese than baking it. Specially when topped with garlic, rosemary, honey and sea salt. This combination of flavour is just perfect and taste so delicious specially with crusty toasted bread.

Traditionally camembert cheese comes in a wooden box which is used for baking. If your cheese doesn't comes in a wooden box, you have to transfer it to a snug fitting ramekin to bake.

You can use alternate herb like thyme which goes perfect with this cheese. Make sure to drizzle honey because the combination of the sweet honey, garlic, rosemary and creamy cheese is perfect.

The recipe which I have shared is perfect for camembert cheese. But if you want to elevate your wheel of cheese to the next level, you can top it with variety of toppings. You can top with cranberry jam, raspberry preserves, sautéed mushrooms with garlic, confit garlic and herbs.

One of my most favourite toppings of all is toasted honey glazed walnuts which adds a sweet nutty flavour. You can customise the toppings with seasonal ingredients.

Even though I have shared baked camembert cheese recipe, you can easily swap it for other soft cheese like brie, coulommiers, taleggio, reblochon. The recipe is same for all the cheeses.

    Ingredients

    • Camembert Cheese - use good quality cheese for this baked dish. Traditionally camembert cheese comes in a wooden box which is used for baking. If your cheese doesn't comes in a wooden box, you have to transfer it to a snug fitting ramekin to bake.
    • Herbs - I used rosemary, you can use thyme also.
    • Honey - the sweetness of honey pairs well with the cheese. If you don't want to use honey, use any fruit preserves or maple syrup.
    • Garlic - peel garlic cloves and slice them thinly so they can be inserted into the cheese.
    • Salt - I used fleur de sel salt, but any sea salt can be used.
    • Bread - this baked camembert cheese needs toasted bread to be dipped into.

    Step by Step Pictures

1)Preheat oven to 180 degree C. Take sliced bread on a wire rack or baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil and bake in the oven for 10 minutes.

2)Flip half way through the baking time. Let the bread get toasty, crispy and golden brown. Set aside. Keep the oven on for baking the cheese.

3)If your cheese comes in a wooden box, you can just unwrap the outer packaging and bake them directly in the wooden box. If not, remove the cheese from the package and use a small ramekin to bake the cheese.

4)Take the cheese in a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to make criss cross pattern on it for inserting the garlic slices.

5)Now place the cheese in the ramekin. Insert the garlic slices into the criss cross pattern.

6)Drizzle honey over the cheese. Sprinkle with rosemary and sea salt.

7)Now place this into the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the cheese once baked, let it sit for 5 minutes. Now serve with toasted bread.

    Expert Tips

    • Use snug fitting ramekins to bake the cheese, else it may melt all over the place.
    • You can top it with any fruit preserves after it is baked.
    • Enjoy baked cheese with toasted bread, sourdough toasts, crackers or in a cheeseboard.
    • Herbs like thyme, rosemary can be used.

    Serving and Storage

Leftover baked cheese can be covered with aluminium foil and kept in fridge upto a week. Reheat in oven till bubbly when serving.
