This version is a white coconut chutney. I will share a recipe of getti chutney soon which they serve with set dosa or bhajji bonda. It is a slight variation from this. You can eat coconut chutney with idli, dosa, vada, poori, ven pongal, upma, bonda, goli baji, roti, chapatti, uttapam.

    About Pottukadalai Chutney

Pottu kadalai is also known as roasted gram dal or udacha kadalai. It is added to coconut chutney to create a creamy texture. This chutney is super tasty, it goes well with literally most of the breakfast and tiffin items.

Fresh coconut is ground together with gram dal, green chillies and salt. Sometimes my mom adds garlic in this chutney too. The chutney is never let to boil which may change the texture.A flavourful tempering with coconut oil, mustard, urad dal, curry leaves makes this chutney super yummy.

Fresh Coconut  - For making this chutney, it is best to use fresh coconut. But you can use frozen coconut as well. Make sure to use warm or hot water to grind if you are using frozen coconut.

Roasted Gram Dal - Roasted gram/pottukadalai is loaded with protein and fiber, it is healthy to include it in the regular diet and ideal for weight loss as it is also low in calories. It makes the chutney super creamy and thick.

Green chillies - depending on your spice level, you can add more or less green chillies.

Tempering - for tempering, you have to use coconut oil, urad dal, mustard, curry leaves. Chopped shallots, dry red chillies can be used.
