I love to eat non vegetarian dishes,but most of the time it will be vegetarian…Do you know that you can go more adventurous with vegetarian dishes than any other food..
Specially with dals..You could make it in hundred ways..The dals which you use are same but the taste differs with the ingrediants you put in..
This recipe comes straight from maharastra and it is so simple to make..So here you go for the step by step recipe with pictures..
Toor Dal / Tuvaram Paruppu / Split Pigeon Peas – 1 cup
Tomato-1 large chopped
Garlic-6 cloves chopped
Ginger-1 inch piece chopped
Green chilli-3 chopped
Cumin seeds / Jeerakam-1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds / Vendayam- ½ tsp
Curry leaves-1 spring
Sugar to taste
Salt to taste
Lemon juice to taste
Coriander leaves / Cilantro for garnishing
Wash dal in lots of water and soak it for 30 mins..Take that in pressure cooker and add 3 cups of water..Cook for 2 whistles and simmer for 10 mins…Let the pressure go all by itself..Set aside for a moment.
Heat oil in a kadai..Add in cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds.
Add in Ginger and Garlic..Fry this for 1 min.
Add in green chilli and curry leaves..fry for 1 min.
Now add in onions and hing and cook till for 5 mins..
Throw in the tomato and mix well..Cook for 3 mins or until the tomatoes turn mushy.
Pour in dal and mix well…Add in required amount of water..Bring this to boil and simmer for 5 mins.
Season with salt and sugar and mix well.Squeeze in some lemon juice.
Garnish with cilantro.Serve hot with rice and any subzi.
