Amma is famous for her coconut barfi, whenever my cousins visit our place, the first thing which they request my mom is to make some coconut barfi. My mum makes it as an edible gift for them to take along their journey.

Since it is so easy peasy to make, this barfi has taken its strong reputation in our house. She also makes rava ladoo, it is one of her specialities.

    About Coconut Barfi

Coconut barfi also known as thengai barfi, nariyal barfi, nariyal ki barfi is made with fresh or desiccated coconut.

Coconut is cooked with sugar till thickened and set in moulds. I have made a similar kind of recipe made with coconut which has double layer called as double decker coconut barfi.

It just calls for simple everyday ingredients. You will need just coconut, sugar and little ghee. This recipe doesn't uses too much ghee, just add a tablespoon of ghee for flavour.

Coconut barfi is made using basic ingredients which you already have on hand. If you are looking for any sweets to make under 15 minutes then this is the recipe.

You can make coconut barfi many different ways. Here are few variations you can try when making coconut barfi.

    • Coconut Barfi with jaggery - Instead of sugar you can use grated jaggery for making barfi.
    • Coconut Barfi using Condensed milk - Desiccated coconut, sweetened condensed milk, ghee and chopped nuts and cooked together till thickened and transferred to a tray to set.
    • Thengai Barfi using Sugar Syrup - First sugar is cooked with water to make single string consistency and then coconut is added and cooked to create burfi. This method gives a little firm coconut burfi.
    • Coconut Barfi using Coconut Milk - freshly grated coconut is cooked with coconut milk and sugar. The thickened mixture is poured in tray to set. This burfi is rich and dense.

    • Coconut - best coconut barfi is made using fresh coconut. but you could use desiccated coconut or dried coconut flakes too.
    • Sugar - sugar is important to make the coconut barfi set. There are recipes in which you can use jaggery instead of sugar.
    • Ghee - very little ghee is used in nariyal barfi. you need to add ghee just to give a nice aroma.
