Spicy Potato Podimas Recipe - Madurai Urulai Pottalam Recipe - Potato Masal Recipe

I came across this recipe few days ago and immediately wanted to try it. Because potato is my all time favorite veggie.

This is a madurai special recipe. I have never tasted it before, but for your information i am telling a few information about this which i learnt online. This is served from orginal nei mittai kadai shop which is near west gopuram tower. It is a super spicy potato dish which taste great with curd rice, rasam rice and sambar rice.

Cooking Time : 30 to 35 mins

Potato - 3 large boiled and peeled
Oil - 1/4 cup
Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
Urad dal / Ulundu Paruppu - 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds / Sombu / Saunf - 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilli - 2
Curry leaves - 2 sprig
Garlic - 6 cloves chopped
Onion - 1 large chopped finely
Chilli Powder - 1 tblspn
Garam Masala Powder - 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Gram Flour / Besan / Kadalai Mavu - 2 tblspn
Coriander leaves a handful finely chopped


Heat oil in a kadai, add in mustard, urad dal, fennel, dry chilli, curry leaves and let it sizzle.

Add in garlic and saute for a min.

Add in onions and saute for 5 mins or so.

Add in potatoes and mix well. Use your spatula to break the potatoes into small pieces.

Add salt and chilli powder and mix well.

Add in garam masala powder and mix well. Cook for 5 mins or so.

Add in gram flour and mix well. Roast this for 5 to 8 mins,

Add in coriander leaves and mix well.


Boil potatoes till done

take all your ingredients

Take your potatoes

peel the skin off

break it lightly

Heat oil in a kadai, add seasoning ingredients

add in garlic

add in onions

mix well and cook till done

add in potatoes

break it into small pieces

roast for few mins

add in salt

Add in chilli powder

mix well

add in garam masala powder

add in gram flour

mix well and roast for few mins


add coriander leaves

mix well
