    About Krishna Janmashtami

    Krishna Jayanthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna. It is known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. This occasion is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna. This festival usually falls between August or September of the Gregorian calendar.

    Janmashtami is popular festival around india. People celebrate by breaking Makhan handi and dancing and singing around lord krishna. Bhajans happens all over Maharashtra and people celebrate by distributing sweets to friends and family.

    Maharashtra

    Janmashtami is popular festival around Mumbai, Maharashtra region. People celebrate by breaking Makhan handi and dancing and singing around lord krishna. Bhajans happens all over Maharashtra and people celebrate by distributing sweets to friends and family.

    Gujarat and Rajasthan

    People in Dwarka in Gujarat believes that Krishna has established his kingdom and celebrates the festival with a tradition of Makhan Handi which is a pot with freshly churned butter. Others celebrates with singing, dancing around the temple.

    South India

    People decorate their houses with flowers and light. Batter made with rice flour, turmeric and water and used to draw krishna's feet from the entrance of the house till pooja place. This indicates that lord krishna has arrived to our house.

    How We Celebrate Janmastami

    It is an important festival in Hinduism. Dance-drama of the life of Krishna (according to the Krishna Lila), devotional singing through the midnight, fasting till the following day are a part of the Janmashtami celebrations. It is celebrated all over tamil nadu, kerala and north regions.

    We make lots of sweets and snacks including homemade butter to offer krishna. We used to decorate kids as radhe and krishna on this special occasions. Traditionally we make snacks and sweets like murukku (chakli), seedai and other sweets for this occasion.

    One of the main sweet which we make is made with aval or poha. It is a poha ladoo or sweet aval. Homemade butter is one of the main dish which we offer lord krishna.

    We celebrate Janmashtami by fasting, singing, praying together, preparing and sharing special food. Major Krishna temples organize bhajana. Many northern Indian communities organize dance-drama called as krishna leelas.

    The tradition of Rasa Lila is particularly popular in the Mathura region, in northeastern states of India such as Manipur and Assam, and in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
